Takeshi Yasutoko

Takeshi Yasutoko, aka the “Japanese Bullet” and “Samurai”, is a 19-year-old inline skating sensation. At 15, he became the youngest vert skater to medal at the X Games. Takeshi has a profound respect for his 22-year-old brother Eito, the only male skater to win three X Games gold medals.

Widely known as “the first skate family of Japan”, Takeshi and his brother have plans to guide their family business, Goodskates, after retirement. Shanghaiist caught up with Takeshi at the opening of Shanghai’s new SMP Skate Park, the biggest in the world. Aferward, we got a rare and privileged opportunity to skate with the Japanese Bullet.

Yasutoko Brothers

Watch Them Fly - Exclusive Interview with The Yasutoko Brothers (2002). by Venus Rae

My first initial thought of the Yasutoko’s brothers was graceful. I just arrived at the photographers’ ramp - and at that moment a blur motion in gray whizzed through the air directly in front of me. It took me a second to realize that this is one of the Yasutoko brothers - I’m not sure which one he was suspended in the air. He stayed there for a while, as if flying and then as fast and he got up he went down again, skating within the vertpipe.

Needless to say, I was already impressed. But who am I kidding, we’re talking about the Yasutoko brothers.

A brief history about them. Born and raised in Japan (although, growing up, they spend more time overseas than at their homeland), they got involved in the skating world at a very young age. Fast forward to their teenage years, they became instant hit in the world of agressive in-line skating, competing with the best the sport has to offer.
