What’s up everyone! Here’s the second State of Mind Webisode of the season: Wild (Woodward) West State of Mind.
Some of you may know that I grew up rollerblading. Ya ya fruitbooter! ;) All jokes set aside, I really did love it and feel as though it’s helped me become the skier I am today.
Last summer, my girl Ashley Battersby and I rolled out to Woodward West in Cali on some windy days to get some foam pit action going. We had a blast, check it out!
Right now I’m shredding in Mammoth getting ready for X, next webisode coming soon, stay tuned! – Kaya Turski.
About Kaya Turski
Kaya Turski is a Canadian freestyle skier. She is a two-time Winter X Games champion in slopestyle (2010 & 2011).
At the 2010 Winter X Games XIV held in Aspen, she won her gold medal with the highest ever slopestyle score at a Winter X Games with 96.66.
One week after she won the gold medal in Slopestyle at the 2011 Winter X Games XV in Aspen, Colorado, ahead of Keri Herman and Grete Eliassen, she captured the silver medal at the 2011 FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships (Wikipedia).
Kaya Turski, pro skier and a rollerblader, turned 22 years old a few months ago and we all heard about her.
At the moment she began to compete, she went to the LG Action Sports World Championships of Dallas in 2006, finished 4th, then became a pro at the finals in Los Angeles, won the Vermont Open in ski, and wins her second straight X Games women’s Slopestyle gold medal this year.
She can be seen in the dvd Road to Nowhere next to Chase Rushing, Sean Santamaria, or Michael Collins, Brenton Wheeler..
Sponsored by Red Bull, Orage, Oakley, Salomon, Skullcandy, DonJoy, and D-Structure, I really wanted her to share with all her vision of Rollerblading and of her other passions in my column.
Kaya Turski dominated the field to win the first gold of Winter X Games 14. Check this ESPN Video.

so i ended up lacerating my kidneys slightly, which wasnt that big a deal so they didnt have to fix that. i bruised my lung (or lungs?) and that was another thing they were just going to leave to get better. The worst part was that i completely tore my pancreas in two. In the beginning, they just put in some stent cuz they didnt think it was torn all the way through, but the next day i had surgery to take out the torn piece out (the end of my pancreas) cuz they had realized it was in two pieces. What’s going on with your rollerblading career and how has it helped your skiing?
Women’s rollerblading is really slow right now, so I’m taking it easy in the skating world. Lately I’ve actually been skating vert, something I was never really doing seriously, so I can try to bring that to skiing pipe.
Rollerblading helps me a lot for skiing with balance on rails and landings. If you can land on skates, chances are you can land on something 20 times the size of skates. [...]
How do you came from rollerblading to skiing?
I dont really know what happened. Rollerblading had been the main part of my life. I guess I just started to drift away from it slowly, and one day it just clicked that I wanted to ski. And so i did.. and fell in love. I still skate as much as I can though.

Kaya Turski, the female rollerblader and freestyle skiing champion sponsored by Salomon was seriously injured.
Upon landing a 540, Kaya veered off to the side of the landing, catching a ski on a wooden quazi-stair case that ran the length of the landing. She was sent tumbling down the steep wooden slope until coming to a stop at the bottom.
She was then taken to a near-by hospital for treatment. Last night (Monday), she underwent surgery to repair internal injuries. Details of the surgery are not being released to respect her privacy until more details are known about the extent of her injuries. source

Update on Kaya Turski :
I spoke with Kaya today and she is in good spirits and eager to get out of the hospital and back to her home in Montreal after completing surgery last week and overcoming some minor complications.
Doctors have told her that she’ll be back in action and 100% in two months. She’ll rest at her home with her parents until then while she finishes up school (a sort of “junior” college, called CEGEP in Quebec).
Kaya sustained serious internal injuries after crashing down the wooden stair case set up along the sides of the landing at Icer Air in San Francisco November 4th. She finished in 2nd place at the contest with her first run and crashed on her second.
Everyone at Freeskier wishes Kaya the fastest of recoveries. Keep your head up and your stick on the ice.
You can send Kaya cards, flowers, chocolates or love letters to the following address, and they will be delivered to her when she gets back to Montreal in the next couple of days :
