Slow Motion Skating Clips (1265 frames per second)

Rodrigo Lagoa is currently working for Dvpro in Brazil and had the chance to film some clips with the Phantom Miro eX4 Camera.
This industrial camera films at 1265 frames per second for a resolution of 800 x 600 (and support up to 110.000 fps but the resolution is greatly lowered then).
More infos about the Phantom Miro eX4 Camera
Lightweight, portable, rugged. The Phantom Miro eX4 has everything you need in a digital high-speed imaging system.
Whether you are researching the flight of a bumble bee, troubleshooting the fill/seal step of your packaging process, analyzing a golf swing, or drop-testing mobile appliances, there is a Phantom Miro camera that can help you explore your world.
Point and shoot, review and edit: all from the built-in LCD touch screen which also provides immediate feedback on the results of your test or experiment. You can play and rewind the slow-motion movie in normal or fast mode or step through your movie one frame at a time.
Trimming the movie is as easy as setting in-points and out-points prior to saving. With the new Miro eX4, you can also control multi-cine setups and even program our new Image-Based Auto-Trigger feature with the LCD interface.

Sick. Some would say boring but I just just sat here for 8 minutes to watch 6 tricks and I was actually completely into it. I love that stuff. Can get old quick but there were certain points that had me fixated. The switch ups and the moments the skates lock on a grind really work, and the fakie 5 out was exciting coz you don’t realise he’s going 540 and not just a 360 until about 330 degrees and he keeps spinning, and then you realise he may not land it, and he doesn’t – fully had me in suspense, kinda like Inception’s last action sequence but better coz this one was real and not drawn out Hollywood style to the point where it insults the audience’s intelligence.
I LOVED the intro to the Yeah Right skateboard film with the super slow-mo 360flips shot on crystal clear film, and always hoped someone would do it again and expand on it. Still waiting.
Thanks for the edit.

Those guys actually had some really good, steezed out, tricks. The slow mo was a little too slow but, considering this is a camera promo edit I think that was the point. Dope camera, point made.

looks sick… But I hate it if I imagine that there would be a bunch of videos, 2 hours long, only filmed in Slo-Mo, 30 tricks the whole vid…

wouldnt want to see much in edits with this slow mo, but it did exemplify the cameras ability.

AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!
January 27th, 2011 at 10:15 pm
No need for 100k on a cam, just get twixtor, shoot at 1500 shutter speed at sunlight and you´ll get simillar results…you can turn 60 p into 1000 frames but sure the cam won´t capture as much detail as this but, if you just want to speed things down, Twixtor will do the trick as well… anyways good job
January 27th, 2011 at 10:44 pm
@agreed
but twixtor will maybe get you a similar result in a timebase withing 1-2 of sekond of realtime moving .. mor that that and heavy movings in the picture will give you heavy beams :) so no way you can come even close to a result like this .. you must be a fool to compare 60 frames with one over 1000 haha. but anyway i see absolutley no need for such a camera in skating! for sure its fun to experiment around with it .. but filmcompanys rent those things to capture explosions or whatever need to (timewarps) .. so i found it boring to see a whole grind slowed down to almost standing! if you do it do it for a short while .. really short! wich brings me back to agreed where hes right .. for that u can also get twixtor haha :P
January 27th, 2011 at 11:47 pm
for those who wanna do some crazy tricks, be my guest. the camera is here and in hands. just send me an email! heaheaheaheaheahae
January 28th, 2011 at 11:05 am
That was really interesting to see.
Makes you wonder what it would have been like to have seen some of rolling’s most defining tricks filmed in that speed.
Just imagine Dustin Latimer’s BFG 540, Farmer’s 540 Kindgrind in Words, Shima’s Leap of Faith attempt, things like that.
Or anyone with really sick switch-ups. Murda, Vinny Minton and Gonzo instantly spring to mind.
Demetrious George’s jumps.
God there are some interesting possibilities.
Really interesting to see that. Wouldn’t want to see this level of slow-mo integrated into lots of edits, as you get to see less tricks. The dusbtep/slow-mo on every other trick style edits spring to mind. Slow-mo should be used for enders. But I’m stuck in 2001-2004 so that’s just my opinion and nothing more :P
Cheers for sharing that lads.
I dread to think how step-on some of my tricks might look at that speed. Still find I lift my right foot just a fraction before my left foot for mistrials.
January 28th, 2011 at 1:15 pm
heheahae good point darth… im stucked in the same era too heaheahea
January 28th, 2011 at 5:49 pm

whaaat! , most definatly a awsome piece of equipment, should only be used like said, in the most relevent/best action sequences no doubt… comps or street etc… the detail is just jaw dropping and 100grand! same as red cam.. , good for instructional dvds , would be good to break down tricks, and obviously limit the length…
great work and if you can get some pro’s at a good skate park doing some insane tricks… eg winterclash or some other event…
PLEASE DO! ;)
