July 2nd, 2007 at 4:07 pm
I like this… the fact that Frankie is doing something to encourage younger kids and that Chris Farmer is also involved. This shows that B Unique are trying to promote more than just one approach to skating. Its not about rock. Its not about hip hop. Its about skating.
People can criticise this all they want. At the end of the day, at least people are being proactive and trying their best to get skating out there to a public that would not see it in this context otherwise.
Frankie Morales- Chris Farmer= The same damn thing.
They are both incredible skaters with their own approach to something that makes it unique and impressive to watch.

dude, i think ramelle is good, and also has good style, you guys should quit hatin. it dosent matter what you wear or look like, at the end of the day we all rollerblade, stop hatin on your own sport.
July 2nd, 2007 at 6:35 pm
Franky Morales is teaching kids how to skate.,Chris Farmer is involved, the promo tour is giving away skate DVDs, these dudes are promoting themselves the right, positive way, and you imbeciles are still hating. They made this promo tour to show freestyle rolling the way it supposed to be represented.
t’s freestyle because we do things with our skates that makes it so free form and creative like parkour and its rolling because we roll on wheels. It’s not like the old aggressive inline identity which was trying too hard to act tough and extreme like skateboarding and BMX. What are you haters doing to contribute to the survival and resurrection of our art form? All you do is get picked on by skateboarders and make freestyle rolling popular by spreading your hate to other people and wasting your time by muttering (and typing) how much it sucks.
You should see Ramelle Knights old video section on youtube (Billy O’Neill was standing on the same wall in New York). He was standing on the wall that had all the known labellings that teenagers and cultural purists were throwing at each other. It basically means that freestyle rolling isn’t about a new “ghetto sport” or a one-sided mentality. It’s about redoing mistakes and recreating a culture that was screwed up by the mainstream corporations that were in for the money. I believe this tour will be successful and you’ll see more people rolling. Promo tours made streetball popular. I don’t see why it won’t work with this.

this is pretty awesome. especially that mountain dew is getting back into rollerblading. they used to have a team in the bay that I was on that did demos and shit. its good money.haha. but seriously don’t hate. this is a good thing.
July 2nd, 2007 at 11:40 pm
Looking over these pictures brings a point to us, no matter where your from what you listen to, who you believe in, skating brings all kinds together. Franky Morales Teaching that little kid brings such memories from when I started,(2 years ago) just being with guys who skate like that gives you this feeling of being all the same as long as your on a pair of wheels and soulplates.
July 3rd, 2007 at 3:45 am
I can’t believe no one has commented on how the fact that mountain dew sponsoring this, is fucking bullshit. Rollerblading is just repeating the same mistakes it did back in the 90’s. Getting involved with companies who to not give A GOD DAM about what we do and our culture. All they see is potental dollar signs.
Actually, excuse me. ROLLERBLADING isn’t making the same mistakes, “freestyle rolling” is. Hopefully “freestyle rolling” will die quick just like rollerblading did in the 90’s when corporations like mountain dew got involved, and then bounced when the hype died down.
Also, sweet “MD” graffitti rad awesomeness on that bank launch, bro.
July 3rd, 2007 at 3:59 am
i think calling it Freestyle rolling is kind of weak. its like we are trying to cover the fact that its rollerblading.
franky even said it in the last issue of ONE, that freestyle rolling is not what arlo and smith where doing back in the day.
i think we need to embrace our past, not try to cover it up.
i could see it called freestyle ROLLERBLADING, i think its a better name
July 3rd, 2007 at 5:40 am
THIS IS A JOKE RIGHT??
July 3rd, 2007 at 7:03 am
I think that if everyone gets too concerned with a name or “label” then your missing the point. Marketing execs have to be made to feel like they are smart and on to something new before they buy into something that already has a stygma around it. Especially something that has already come and gone as far as modern trends. A new name and image is just simply a good thing for outsiders and that’s about it. The Brown Brothers are just playing the system and the best way to do that is for them to tell the suits in Manhatten that “Hey man this is a NEW thing, not that ‘aggressive inline’ bullshit from 97″ And it worked. And it will continue to work with or without our support because they believe in it and they work hard. The bottom line is this is not to please people who already love skating. This is about getting people who do not skate to take another look at this thing we call “rollerblading.” It’s all about the big picture.
However, the main point is that it NEVER mattered what we were called. It’s just skating. Every activity has several words used to describe it (i know basketball has plenty), but in the end it’s never about a name or label, unless that’s all you care about. It’s about the love of doing it. I mean think of the word “Basketball”. It’s been a LONG time since that sport used a basket. Kind of funny, but like I said, it’s not really that important and nobody seems to care at this point. I mean everyone here in the US calls a sport “football” that really isn’t. The rest of the world has it right and we call it “soccer”. None of it really makes sense but it goes on.
It bothers me to see people hate on those guys because I know for a fact that they all love skating and Ramelle is a super cool person who is down to earth. He just wants to help skating get big and is just doing his thing. When you see him on BET or wherever he is essentially just playing a role. It’s really obvious to me, but maybe because I’ve met him and know where he heart is and how much he cares about the big picture. That picture being that skating is cool and everyone should know about it. I’ve also been to his hood in the Bronx and that shit is no joke. If anyone has the right to act like a thug from the ghetto he does. Trust me.
You might disagree with their methods and that’s fine. Your entitled to your opinion. I do not agree with how a lot of people within skating present our activity, but in the end all I can really do is stay positive, do my own thing, and in reaction present it the way I think it should look. Talking shit and not doing something about it is a real shame. It’s also really pathetic.
Support your fellow rollers. Stay positive. It’s really important and we all know this.

Maybe if you guys didn’t slack off at English and typing classes I would give your replies more attention and credit. *sights* Why do you want it to be called rollerblading? It’s a genericized trademark and very inaccurate and is a mainstream term which is pretty ironic because you are using it on a sport that you consider to be underground. I’ve pretty much dropped the knowledge that was necessary and I could care less about you haters who insist on hiding in their caves. Just listen to wes driver.
July 3rd, 2007 at 8:20 am
Do you not agree with mushroom blading wes?
I really like the name freerolling as well.
Oli Benet said it best when he was using the skiing example.
Families go skiing for the weekend… However if someone tells you they are a freeskier they are seperate from the image of a family going skiing. Early forms of freestyle skiing included neon snowsuits, daffys, and spread eagles.
Rebranding our sport/art/lifestyle on a professional and business level is a great thing. Especially for those wanting to pitch events/films/tours etc…
If you don’t like their movement… go create your own. See if you can generate the hype they’ve mustered up.
You guys have to remember what the word rollerblading means to the everyman.
July 3rd, 2007 at 9:00 am
I think all of us deep down would like to have a “cool” name but in reality I think that the name will always just be that… a name. I just hope people do not get too caught up in taking sides on this current movement because the last thing we need at this point is a divided community. I think that having confidence and being positive about the activity your involved in is ultimately what makes things “cool”. Let the posers worry about the titles and name dropping.
It’s like a lot of music movements of the past 30 years… the media gives it a name that usually the bands can’t stand. For better or worse it sticks and that’s that. And there have been some BAD names given to really good music. I mean EMO is not any of the bands from the past several years that actually have that label. The mainstream media is always off the mark. From my memory, “Emo” was started in Seattle with Sunny Day Real Estate at the same time that Nirvana was blowing up in the early 90s. But when you say EMO nobody thinks about the original bands that the name was coined to represent. Hell, that is just from my memory. It could have been used way before that so who knows. By the time MTV catches on to something it’s never going to be the actual representation of anything.
Also those bands didn’t have a focus group to decide what to be called. They just played the music they liked and the audience/critics gave it a name. Just the way it is I suppose. I think if you are TOO concerned about this stuff it can’t have a wicked backlash.
And I agree with your last statement. A new term (whatever it is) will at least get people to give blading another look. And man will they be blown away. A lot has changed since the mid 90s.

Freestyle rolling ? I thought you meant skateboarding…
July 3rd, 2007 at 1:54 pm
damn, wes, you are damn right.
don’t talk shit guys, just skate (or “blade” or “freestyle roll” it doesn’t matter!) for the love, and pay respect to this people, they are going to make our sport more popular, and it is GOOD!
peace, Boris

This tour is so great for exposure, top dogs of rolling touring and getting to display rolling on their own terms/ramps is like one of the greatest ways to display our shit. I really respect what these guys put together. Mad props!
July 4th, 2007 at 1:40 am
Here’s good example that I never took into account, I was pretty pesimistic of this new name changing movement. When someone tells you they freeski, you instantly know what they are talking about. They had basically rebranded or renamed their aspect of skiing, and now whenever ppl drop freeski, I instantly know what they are talking about. That may be only because I’ve grown up in colder climates where skiing and snowboarding where prevalent. But yeah when I compare freerolling to freeskiing, it makes a lot of sense. We still rollerblade, but telling somone you freeroll, or freeblade seems to help destroy the confusion of Ï rollerblade, like rails, jumps, stunts, you know?” I hate having to always describe it to ppl.
