I hate to sound like the bitter old man that I am but skating was just so much better then.
Truly. It just was. Im sure there are a few of you out there that know what I mean and its not like I still dont skate anymore, cause i do. It was just ‘purer’ then, or so it seems.

That shit was sooooo sick…. way ahead of his time… i remember champ back in the day when he was killing it and that was amazing!! especially that true topsoul down the NISS box ? WOW .. oldman i hear you pro much purer

it had something more unique to it back then.. maybe because it was newer? but yea, i liked it more before. but i still love it now.

The first skater I looked up to. I bought my Oxygen Argon skates because of him.

i hear you oldman. maybe it had something to do with the level of skating and the small gap between pro and am. i watch this and it amazes me that champion was considered a pro back then and kids that ride flo for some companies are much better than than.
but its hard to compare different times like that because skating has changed so much. this was a great movie. i remember watching it and being juiced to skate when i was younger.
there was no pressure back then to be good it was just about having fun.

I hear ya Oldman too. The thing to keep in mind also is, Champ was really young in this video. He got even better and was just INSANE.
The thing I have noticed in alot of the edits now-a-days is it’s more about “look at how cool and jaded I am…….oh ya….I skate too..” I think that it was all about skating back then, the love of skating. Now people are trying to sell themselves I guess, not everyone, but most.
Having said all that, I am 34 married with 6 kids and I love skating more than ever.
Roll.

That true down the niss box was way ahead of its time. Oxygen AR 3.1 is where all the OGs started. Vermontroller, did you ever compete in any of the ASA events in Stowe, VT? I figured if you skate in Vermont, then you must have skated in that.

word. good 2 see old school footage like this. anyone have any Medium, “Children of the Night,” clips? thatd b tite if someone could bring bak old school raw klips of Pat Lennon and old school Dustin Latimer, I’d say Elements 2 section for him just about sums up style and what started style. DL and the Medium guys started this whole shindig with emo and straight up having a flair. keep it old school!

great and bitter memories at once, I was on a little powerslide germany skatepark tour with him and jake elliot in march 1997, really nice guy always making pictures of almost every old building :-), he was on oxygen back then…good times and my last skating until 2004 cause I had to quit after a bad spine injury. Glad to be able to roll again.
btw I understand what people want to say it was all better in oldschool days, the kids just had more fun I think cause it was new and cool and we loved it…but there are many doing it for the fun today too so it’s up to us to make it feel like back then ;-)

The screen shot from the video is the photo from the white cover Daily Bread mag. I think it was my first Daily Bread.

For a lot of people skating was “better back then” because they had very few responsibilties and didnt worry about getting hurt because they lived with their parents. Skating is as pure as you make it and the skates nowadays make locking on soo much easier than say rollerblade lightnings. Ive been rolling for 19 years(and yes I started in Rec skates jumping over trash cans and riding steps fakie) am married with 3 awesome kids and skating is even more fun today because of the evolution of skates like xsjados(the old man skate). Nowadays its all about Yoga and staying away from big gaps, but that doesnt stop me from ao fishing big tranny when Im feeling it…

June 9th, 2009 at 6:26 am
WOW! I thought I was the only one that still feels this shit!! Yeah, no shit, rolling had some sort of magic back then…. I skate, and still keep progressing, I do the newschool tricks, the spin to grinds and all that new shit, but I don’t know why back then was magical,
I love it like I used to do, but its just different, I’m glad I had the honnor to have lived in those times… tarmacs man… scribe, hahaha!
CDS DETROIT! thats just unforgettable! much love, rolling is truly the ultimate shit! I’ll roll forever and happier that there are so many people out there! keeping it real for the oldschool and newschool! MUCH LOVE!

I feel you Oldman^^^ those were the good ole days when no one cared how good you were or how you dressed or looked, everyone was just skating to have fun. Nice to see so many OG’s above^ that are still skating.

Its strange… I half agree with the comments on skating back then being more pure and half want to say wake up look at how everthing has developed to the benefit of the sport… ok there is no money in it AT ALL and the majority of people just dont know what they are doing when they are not willing to give props to the little kid who is juiced to have done his first a o on a hand rail because it was horribly sktechy and now a days 80% of what we do is based on style… if someone is lacing the greatest tricks you have ever seen but cannot do it with perfect style then we all slate the shit out of them… back then you would give props all the time… if someone was walking down the street wearing a skate branded Tshirt you would want to go say hello and you would be instant friends… maybe we should try to learn from that attitude and try to be a better community to the new people who are ….
I’ve lost interest in my rant… you get the idea…
and finally – how nice was the topsoyal at the end… and that was early 97 or 96…

One of my friend came out in 2000-01 with an old 1996 Medium Brand tape, with a crazy Proile On CHampion B. He was already doing amazing tricks (back in the days) such as full cab soyal to AO top soyal, top soyals on hand rails, etc.
