RollToronto, Blading Wellness: Rob Guerrero

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

This is the second part of a series we’re doing to promote blading wellness (check the Murda Interview here), and encourage rollerbladers to take care of their bodies. After the first interview with Murda at the Montreal Classic, Corey Grantham convinced Robert Guerrero to sit down with us and share his insights on blading wellness. Rob was a very talkative interviewee, and had a lot of personal experiences to talk about. He strongly believes in stretching and eating well, so we had lots to talk about right off the bat.

One topic that Rob continued to visit was taking care of your joints. He didn’t mention this in his interview, but I thought I would mention the use of glucosamine. I have recently started taking it on a regular basis, to see if it has any effect on the wellness of my joints. The idea here is that if you take a supplement to improve lubrication in your joints, that it will have a positive effect on your body, and therefore improve your skating. But does it work? Thats hard to say. Some people say it does, and some avoid it. It’s hard to measure this sort of thing. One thing you can ask yourself is can you afford to pay about 40 bucks a month to take a pill that might help your body feel better? Is it worth it? Thats up to you.

Rob talks about a number of different things you can do to keep your body in shape – from martial arts training, to eating well, and balancing your mind with your body. But enough out of me, watch the interview and I’m sure you’ll come to your own conclusions.

Robert Guerrero & David Sizemore Mtl Classic Edit

David and I rented a car and drove from Vermont to the MTL Classic. This was the funnest contest I have been to in a LONG time.

David and I had a blast the day of the contest, and the night before. These are some of the clips from both of those sessions.

Shock: Rob Guerrero Interview

Rob Guerrero

I respect Robert Guerrero immensely.

Through the years Rob’s skating has grown and grown into something too beautiful for words. To put it poetically, his blading is a swimming through ever opening doors.

Whenever he graces the bay area scene with his presence I silently admire his style, flow, and consistency. As the session progresses his lines build and build from simple, perfectly executed lines, to lines peppered with extremely technical grinds, boosting airs and tucked switch, natural and illusion spins.

He is an inspiration to any passionate rollerblader over 25 years old. Rob is also one of the few overseers of the numerous rollerblading communities all over the world. For years he has been traveling through the country, from one rollerblading shire to the next, infusing each with his revitalizing energy.

He is perhaps the closest thing we have to a rollerblading guru, yet at the same time he is a sensitive, self critical, and real person who is open enough to admit that he is still finding himself.

Rob lives his live by the motto, ‘be open to the present moment’, and this continues to guide him from one moment to the next. As a culture we are continually blessed to have ‘Rob G. to the full effect’.

Still doin it in San Jose. Rob G and I went out a few days to hit up the local parks to break in his new ROLLERBLADE skates.

These skates are ill by the way if you like to roll park. He hooked me up with an old pair and I gotta say they’re very fast and smooth with large frames and wheels.

Not the most stylish skate compared to the new ones out today in terms of having skins, but an OG like me still likes to see a bare hard boot shell. The soul material is awesome and slides no problem any waxed surface. Check it out yall.
