What Do You Believe In? Full Video (Repost)

Written and directed by industry pioneer Arlo Eisenberg, edited by rollerblading’s most influential filmmaker Joe Navran (FOR II, Elements, Coup De Tat) and produced by Mindgame‘s Shane Coburn, “What Do You Believe In?” set out to completely re-imagine what a rollerblading video could be.
“What Do You Believe In?” features five of the brightest stars in rollerblading: Brian Shima, Jon Elliott, Josh Petty, Rachard Johnson, and Jaren Grob. The video focuses on their skating, which is some of the best ever captured on film, but it is complemented by a surreal story line which weaves in and out of their sections.
“What Do You Believe In?” is not a narrative story in the conventional sense, nor is it a standard skate video neatly divided into rider’s sections. It is a low budget, experimental, artistic interpretation of skating that does not merely break all of the rules but seems to be completely unaware of them altogether.
The skating alone would rank “What Do You Believe In?” among the best videos ever made, but add to that its artistic vision and its fearless conviction to add something completely new to the rollerblading landscape and what you’ve got is an instant classic. “What Do You Believe In?” is a landmark video and a must have for any rollerbladers collection.

November 26th, 2009 at 10:56 am
haha yeah definitely a classic! JP to AF “ive been making sections since you were rolling around in a fucking helmet” that line was funny as fuck back then, now….not so much. Wish those guys were still rolling.
Rollerblading needs more personalities like the old FP crew.
November 26th, 2009 at 11:09 am
Fuck yes! One of my old favourites!
November 26th, 2009 at 12:19 pm
djwrekshopmusic, you are so right! I agree with you 100%! I think in a way, rollerblading is still made of personalities like this. but today its just different.
People are not so focused in the personality, only the skating.
anyways, great video!
Regards,
Fred

Despite I’m not too keen on the real life personality side of the pros in this video myself, it is definitely one of the best videos of all time in regards of skating and plot-line.
The rabbit theme would be recycled by Cullen in his “Rabbit hole” adaptation of the theme years after, I even wonder whether the incorporation of the Christian cross into the Cullen niche is rooted in this very piece of work. The symbolism referring to the rollerblading culture is ever so strong in this video. Refer to the life plus Arlo interview for more on that, it’s actually quite dense.
I feel it´s a great piece of work that hasn’t received enough rollerblading journalism attempting to decipher certain aspects that are very relevant to understand the rollerblading lifestyle as an insider.
I may like to read into these themes too much, but I see a direct relationship between the symbolism on “the apple fell over the lake” and “what do you believe in?”.
Josh Petty swinging from trend to trend just like the rollerblading community does changes baggy to tight… etc. Elliott and Shima fighting against spots, fears and demons inside of them, Rachard as the black Peter Pan thugged out that “doesn´t know where this world is gonna go but knows that this is the life for him” and Jaren as the rabbit himself.
NIck riggle on shock;
“The F.P. guys are exemplars of personality? That strikes me as very strange. If you want personality, go back to Arlo Eisenberg, Brooke Howard-Smith, B Love, Andy Kruse, Tom Hyser, AJ Jackson – original pros. They had powerful personalities and did everything they could to support and promote the rollerblading industry. They started Senate, for God’s sake. They managed skate teams and were TV personalities, among many other things. Being a personality doesn’t require being Dash Snow. I would hope that there is much more of interest in a rollerblader than their ability to trash a hotel room, degrade people, or do drugs.”
I always thought it was awkwardly funny to have these egotistic pros being shaped under Arlo´s script. Somehow, we got a lot of their personality brought out by this weird script, and by the looks of it, it was quite accurate to each one of them.
Anyone knows about a decent article on this whole subject?
I’d love a link to read end expand on the issue.

Quelle année de sortie? Year?
November 26th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
Azur, SHUT THE FUCK UP. fucking wall of text.
Arlo, B, BHS, Hyser, andy and Chris began this and stepped out when a better, more skilled and more marketable group of skaters came about. Why is shima and friends still looked up to? Because many of the pros after them are all missing something, personality. Pros today are so anal retentive when it comes to what the parents think that they become bland. Big up to Billy O’neil and Mr. George for showing us who they really are and not trying to please people who don’t matter.
Can we get a Black lab media/Joe Navron colabo.
November 26th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
This is a classic! Nothing like it before or since thats all I know. Ah Azur you say those people blocking Elliot are like inner demons. I didn’t realise it I thought it was sortof like fighting convention and authority the rabbit representing said themes. But thats a total guess! All I know is this videos legendary!

classick!!……………………
November 27th, 2009 at 9:24 am
mabye it is a good thing we lack the dont give a fuck attitude.
i personally find it off putting when people behave like that. i enjoy when i see a pro take things seriously. rollerblading is an art, not a game.
November 27th, 2009 at 11:52 am

September 11th, 2011 at 10:26 am
I remember the day James brought this video home. I might even still be up in the attic somewhere, who knows. There’s also a hoodie with the rabbit logo on it around here somewhere.
As far as James was concerned, this was a groundbreaking video, a game changer. Those were better days.
September 11th, 2011 at 11:59 am
Just my fav old video, Shima’s part rocks !
September 11th, 2011 at 1:32 pm
nice video, hahhah i forgot Jaren Grob because hated him in the past but he s very good. about old and new generation. i think that we cannot compare, because material and mentalities changed. the Shima, J.Julio, Latimer Generation which is more mine bring something, new generation with guys like Kelso s, Farmer, Haffey, Oneil purpose another rollerblading. and the Eisenberg Generation were totally diffrent too. Maybe tricks didnt changed a lot except switchup or necative, the style changed actual rider are smoother and quicker.
Past Generation rided more simply and maybe dont look like an emo like some guys are saying, but even i enjoy relooking the old video, that i looked when i were 15 /20. I really hate the Baggy style,
Actual rider maybe look gay for some of people but tricks are quicker, smoother, and actually i prefere looking a video like truth 2 than coup de tat.
I think we have to live with our world, People who cannot and live regretting the “old good time” are in the wrong way.
Living in the past means that you became old like when your grand-parents speak you everytime you meet them of the war and about the old stories that you dont care anymore.
After reading all comments i think that too much people here are old guys and forgot some importants basic things about Rollerblading spirits and thinking, and Forgot how they were 10 years ago, when they started with big parachute baggy pants and older said it were ridiculous (because baggy are ridiculous with time i understood it).
So enjoy old video, enjoy new video but stop comparing and stop critcizing new rider only because they dress differently you dressed at 20. and for a 30 YO guy with the mind of a 70 YO it s too hard to be a bit open mind.
September 11th, 2011 at 11:50 pm

“the incorporation of the Christian cross into the Cullen niche is rooted in this very piece of work.” shut the fuck up dude..”this piece of work”…seriously? Arlo is known for drawing sperm with smiley faces, so he might have pioneered the early days of rollerblading but he’s no profound movie script writer.
