What an old school skateboarder had to say about Barely Dead
Garett posted some quotes of Grimcity :
Also, fuck any and everyone that uses the term “Action Sports”, means it, and attempts to classify skateboarding in that group. Fuck them with a fire hydrant (note: that wasn’t explicitly done in this video, but everyone that uses the term “action sports” lumps skateboarding into that category)..
From the clip, Quote:
“We’ve done all the fine tuning, now it’s time to build a culture around it a little bit…”PUKE, PISS, BUKKAKE. For fuck’s sake, if someone wants to rollerskate down a 50 stair handrail, that’s fine… way to go, neato… but “build a culture” around it? Eat a lumpy diseased infested dick. Anything “built” around it will be artificial… “culture” is something that manifests itself naturally… culture just happens. Any and every “culture” you try to make will be complete and utter bullshit.
Joe: “Hey Bob, what are you working on today?”
Bob: “I’m trying to invent a culture for rollerblading.”
Joe: “Sounds swell! Hey, I have a buddy that sells Amway for a living… whattaya say you help to include Amway into this new fangled rollerblade culture? He really could use the money.”
Bob” “Fuck yeah we’ll include that in this new culture… ooohhh, we have to include Grape Nuts too. From now on, Grape Nuts is part of blader culture!”I will give props out to Arlo Eisenberg (featured in the vid linked in this thread)… he was a part of one of the best interviews ever in Big brother (aka “Worst Issue Ever,” the one with Josh Kasper doing a Benihana over a bunch of really fat chicks covered in blood)… he knows he’s a kook, he pretty much says it. He knows (and says repeatedly) that rollerblading in its current form is a rip off of skateboarding. Now, I don’t vibe him for wanting to play on his skates, but I give him props for being up front and honest about what he does… for that, he gets free beer. It’s not even the act of rollerblading that gets to me (unless I’m waiting for one to crawl out of a bowl), it’s this whole fake as culture/steez thing that so many of them want to portray.
I am a bigot on the matter. I was riding a board before their sport-thing was ever really a sport-thing. They don’t have roots, they don’t have history. To that end, I understand… it’s new, so fine… everything has a beginning. Beyond that, don’t proactively try to establish some sort of mythos around it. If it’s destined to have a culture, it will. Any intentioanl “world” created around it is false, and amounts to nothing more than a day time soap opera.
Having said that, nothing about this video reminds me of skateboarding in the 80’s. In the 80’s, skateboarding had already been well established for nearly 30 years… it had its roots in surfing, and always identified itself as such (especially in the west coast). Skateboarding never denied where it came from, nor did it make shit up to make itself legit. If anything, skateboarding (and skateboarders as a whole) have prided themselves on the fact that it wasn’t/isn’t legit, even while megacorporations repeatedly try to sell it to the masses.

sounds like gramps missed his shuffle-board match this week. in his defense, he is right about the culture, this isnt something you can invent, it happens naturally. just like hip-hop culture. it was invented in the bronx, but there were pre-existing elements which played into hip-hop culture. culture can also manifest with change. an example of that in rollerblading low amount of exposure. this gives our culture a ‘backs to the wall’ attitude.
i believe people should worry more about being happy skating, rather than getting noticed by others. the only thing i worry about in industry is the skate-producing companies going under before im ready to hang up my skates.
September 14th, 2006 at 2:40 pm
i don’t think he unserstands exactly what was meant by “buiding a culture”. it doesn’t mean sitting in one’s basement thinking about how rollerbladers should dress and what kind of music they listen to.
i think it means more inner growth, supporting the brands, going out to the events, supporting other rollerbladers. as opposed to buying “skateboard” brands and not giving a shit about the industry.
September 14th, 2006 at 2:42 pm
ya umm 30 years+ thats a long time compared to the 15 years rollerblading has been around, come on u know you could land that 50 stair hand rail by commiting your life to landing that one trick, (life of every sakteboarder ).. and i see it everyday same gromets same tricks new skate boards haha im gonna start selling batons at sakte parks , casue its the same thing right? is flippin a baton in the air like flippin a skateboard ? i like it when people comment on topics and its easy to tell they are out of the looop or have been out of the loop for soo long obviously just another hater to wahtevers new and scary (alot like old people). but uhh wahts sakte boarding culture?,, waht u see in the movies? on TV? ya thats exactly waht it is, rollereblading isnt on tv or in commercials so u get guys like this sayin “oh man does rollerblading ever lack in culture, but uve missed out on all the comps all the battels all the tricks all the pics , and i am just assuming uve never been to a rollerblading comp casue there weak right? apparently, thats what my skateboard friend told me even though hes never really seen a rollerblading comp or anything to do with rollerblading at all .. but for real waht r sakte boarders gonna do when everyone realizes that the knee high ledge thats sakted in every video is getting old and boardsliding a hand rail isnt fun to watch casue uve seen it over and over .. sorry guys its starting to get obvious ur becomming jelous of our hot spots and skilllllllllllllll. Just thank god everyday that sakteboarding came first because thats the only reason u have to make sakteboarding seem cooler than rollerblading .. u even said it urself “I was riding a board before their sport-thing was ever really a sport-thing.” sport thing ! hahaha save the rainforest buy some rollerblades.. now lets all go cone dodging casue thats the only rollerblading they show on TV sooo its gotta b lame right ? yup

September 14th, 2006 at 3:42 pm
nice text.
smart guy, and he said true things.
but rollerblading has more beautifull moves than skateboarding.
September 14th, 2006 at 3:57 pm
to Dp who said skateboarding is like baton twirling:
you are exactly right i have been saying it for years
skateboarding it the same thing as flipping a batonin the air and catching it and rollerblading thats more like dancing why? bc rollebrlading is a full body activity with style and coordination skateboarding is like winterguard which my friend’s 7th grade sister does at her middleschool…
rolling as advanced more in the last 10 years than skateboarding has in the past 50 so any ignorant skateboarder like him needs to shut his mouth..
also about building a culture fuck what he said, we do need to build a culture, i agree culture happens on its own but when there are assholes like him in the world that keep crushing us and the little bit of culture we develop how are we suppose to thrive?
rolling will come back i don’t care if i have to do it myself i will bring rolling back to life if i have to i will never stop skating. if the companys go out of buisiness i will make skates out of fucking milk jugs hahah thats my level of dedication and i pledge iot to rolling
fuck that guy
September 14th, 2006 at 3:59 pm
such a dumb interview. he tries to sound like he knows what hes saying, but he doesnt. in essence, he’s wasting his time being a poser.
September 14th, 2006 at 4:14 pm
TRUE skateboarding has been around for a very long time but all theyve been doing is the same fucking thing!! flip that baordslide that spin a bit at that and hope. whereas our “sport” started as a fitness device and look at it now were hitting bigger shit and doing better shit on it than they ever have everyones grown a bit used to skateboarding everyones seen it already im not saying they should stop cus thats not the point, im saying rollerblading has more to offer because new shit is done every day, and new ways to skate look at Rob G or farmer or damien wilson there dropping skating stuff no ones even thought of, and aragon murda haffey stockwell are throwin down hammers no one could even think of.
We are a noble sport more noble than any other, we lay the hammers wen no ones watching for ourselves, We not only support our companies but we kno who frickin runs them and who owns them! we alredy are a culture just a small one, and a diverse one, just cus its small doesnt mean its not a culture.
The jokes on him neway he saw Barely Dead which proves more people are taking notice hes just trying to put us down cus hes jealous that his sport is fading and he knows if it does and becomes “uncool” then everyone will quit and fuck off, whereas (like arlo said) we stay in it for the love and the people who are the pros and next pros have fucking earnt it!
FUCK HIM! BARELY DEAD RULES!
September 14th, 2006 at 4:17 pm
“megacorporations repeatedly try to sell it to the masses.” Try? They totally accomplished selling it to the masses.
September 14th, 2006 at 4:18 pm
Who was that guy anyways? It was probably Alex Chalmers the most hated person in BC.

September 14th, 2006 at 4:34 pm
Skateboard, Inline, I really don’t understand why there is such a big
grudge.
Element is a sell out, owned by billabong. DarkStar, Minilogo, Blind, World
Industries, sold to a major company. Sad thing is, Skate boarding is no
longer owned by the skateboarders. They are owned by some big ass
corporate and the majority of the boards they make are pressed in
china and to be honest mate, they are cheap ass quality.
Whats inline?
We aint rich, we got no money, we aren’t definately not “cool” in our
society right now.
But guess what? we are in control of our fucking culture. Our clothes are
not made by some fucking lame ass surfer designers who only knows
how to use templates.
So, Skateboarding apparently has a culture….
but they sold it to corporate companies.
Inline skate doesnt have a culture but we aint a sell out.
There will be a day when a corporate company will buy our sport but
guess what kids? dont fuckin wear the product.
but yet again, arlo is right. We need growth in our community.
and we need posers to buy our product. Sad isnt it?
And you know what guys? who cares about what this alcoholic is saying
anyway. I think the bitch he fancied was fucked by a blader and he
really wanted to shug the bird and it turned into jealousy.
We got balls mate.

on a serious note.
I skate vert at this woodward park. I bump into a ton of these 25+ year old skateboarders. You know, the ones with their socks rolled up high that have skated since before you knew how to walk?
Its funny because 50% of them go out of their way to ignore me, not make eye contact, deny my existence, even though we’re on the same ramp for over an hour together.
Is it because my “sport thing” is gay and I’m stupid compared to them? Or is it because Ive been skating for 6 years, and I can boost twice as high as their best, plus land spins and flips they couldnt land with another 20 years of skateboarding under their belt?
Im all for love and respect for skateboarders, but anyone who acts like a jerk like our ancient skateboarder friend is going to end up looking like a jerk to everybody. In my opinion, idiots are idiots regardless of what vehicle they may choose to scoot their silly arses around
Seriously. stop hating.
September 14th, 2006 at 5:18 pm
listen, you obviously don’t know shit about our rollerblading industry / community. rollerblading DOES need a culture, and companies like b unique, misled media, valo, remz and xsjado are all helping to build up this exciting unique culture that everybody wants and everybody loves to see. rollerblading has had little or no culture for years because companies weren’t original enough and nobody explored into new realmslike the should have. now our culture is happening and will continue to grow and change forever.
shut the fuck up before u try hating on us with some stupid shit like that.
and why the HELL was this posted on the main page its major bullshit..
September 14th, 2006 at 5:21 pm
yeah football industry suck i prefer basketballl industry ..
i prefer play futbol than basketball ..
September 14th, 2006 at 5:51 pm
I enjoy the fact that time in and time out we prove to be comfortable enough with our sport to post things like this. If something this well thought out was presented to the skateboarding industry Transworld would never include it in their magazine because their sport would actually diminish because of it. In no way does my lifestyle reflect any sort of “culture” that could be interpreted as a rollerblading culture, but when I put my Remz on and go tear up rails it doesn’t matter. Skateboarders are generally the same but whats different about us is that there are so many different styles of skating. It’s the lack of a culture that makes us unique. In no way do I yell Fuck the system un-like some anarchist skateboarder with a mohawk. I embrace the society that allows us to thrive; developing our own business aspect of the sport.
September 14th, 2006 at 5:54 pm
how do we get hold of this guy i wanna kill him silly cnut
September 14th, 2006 at 6:03 pm
Hey, rocksanddirt: Down here in South Africa there are so few vert ramps that the old skateboarders and the vert rollers are actually very friendly. We just see it as two sides to the same thing. I understand their hard tricks and they understand mine, we all go ape when somebody lands something new…
That’s the way it should be: People skating for fun and enjoying the time they spend with other people along the way.
On the other hand, I’d kill to skate Woodward ;)
September 14th, 2006 at 6:06 pm
IF U KNEW ANYTHING ABOUT ANYTHING MISTER OLD SCHOOL SKATEBOARDER THEN YOU WOULD KNOW THAT WE AS A WHOLE WHERE ALL NOBODYS INA WORLD OF NOBODYS SO DONT EVER TRY TO SAY THAT WHAT U RIDE OR HOW U RIDE OR WHEN U RIDE MAKES U BETTER THEN THE NEXT PERSON ,SPORT OR AGENDA,, YOUR REAL LAME
September 14th, 2006 at 6:12 pm
you can go rollerskate or skateboard or whatever the hell you wanna do !For me theses sports are just a passion ,but it’s not my whole life ,one day I’ll have a wife a house and children and I’ll not care about what kind of “extreme sports” you’ve been practising !
September 14th, 2006 at 6:21 pm
Who cares what this one guy thinks. It sounds like he assumes every culture started the same way as skateboarding. Who gives a fuck how skateboarding got to where it is, we rollerblade so why does that have anything to do with anything. Rollerbladers copy skateboarder styles? Bullshit. It was the same thing said with skateboarders, that they were copying surfers styles. People reflect the clothing style and trends that are presented around them, most likely from other friends. This one guy makes himself out to sound all high and mighty when he is nothing more then an ignorant, arragont asshole.

lol - beside Robert Guerreros interview in b-mag lately this is probably the only thing published in rollerblading media that i felt was really worth reading in maybe 2 years. Seriously laughed my ass off.
Our roots were always fake. We started as a sell out. Theres probably no other thing that attracts as many posers and dumbasses as rollerblading.
Accept the truth and build from there on - its twisted but (therefore) actually quite interesting and a lot of rollerbladings potential lies in it.
Once again the blindness, immaturity and just plain overall dumbness speaking from the responses (exclude maybe 4) coming from my “fellow” rollerbladers makes me angry and actually never want to touch a pair of skates at all.
But i will stay around. With all its controversial influences its way to interesting to watch it unfold. Oddly enough Its astounding how much depth there is in rollerblading if you take it to a symbolic level.
If it really needs a dumbass mass of sheep not able to form a single thought of their own to support the people really dedicated and heavily involved in it, i hope rollernews can act as a recruiting point, as theres surely a lot of dumbness to find here.
To end my quote i will be unmannerly enough to quote Brian Shima: “I dont feel many rollerbladers, and its kind of fucked up”.
Listen to your idols.
September 14th, 2006 at 6:48 pm
hey dislekcia i’m also from s.a woz ur name ? where dya skate ?
September 14th, 2006 at 6:50 pm
iv been keepin it thrasher for years kickkin garbage cans over an tellin security to go fuk themselves while i processd to keep skating,, but times have changed an iv learnd alot now i adapted to how skating is nowadays an i see a security coming an i fall an start screaming im goin to sue whats this balanster doing in my way
September 14th, 2006 at 6:58 pm
Funny that anyone gives a shit about culture, I have enough skates to last a lifetime and that’s all that matters to me. Fuck anyone with the time to criticize other people for skating or scootering or whatever athletic activity you choose. Skateboarding, scootering, jumping around or whatever it is you do, you can probably make it fun and sick if you focus on it enough.
September 14th, 2006 at 7:24 pm
if you go into watching black market 2 totally biased then you’ll come out the same way and look at everything they do and say like an asshole. but if you don’t even know what rollerblading was before seeing this video you’ll come out amazed and surprised that there is such an impressive sport in the underground and you havn’t even heard of it. This dumbass has probably never even talked to a blader in his life or let alone tried to even experience our already established way of life. he even says hes a bigot… come on…
September 14th, 2006 at 7:32 pm
he has a fuckin point man!!!
September 14th, 2006 at 7:49 pm
That old fuck should shut up. Skateboarding fuckin sucks huge and is goin nowhere these days. fuck im tired of everyone puttin down rollerblading. a skateboarder will go up to a long rail and grind the end of it where a blader would grind the whole thing plus do switch ups on it. whats better? haha i agree with DP’s post. start selling batons… SKATEBOARDING SUCKS HUGE!!!! Fuck em dumb wood flippers
September 14th, 2006 at 7:53 pm
We human beings, built traditions, fashions, religions and anything we decided as quickly as we want to, for example, the Santa Claus we all know was created for Coca-Cola in 1931, a movie can effect a culture as soon as it’s in the theatres (such as The Matrix) and you think with the language and the ideas of advertisings so… dear old school skateboarder, give me money and I’ll build you any culture, religion, tradition, new sport kind of music or shit you want to and in (as much) 15 years it’ll be as strong as if it would be here for ever and anyway… I don’t know what your problem is… go and skate a little…
September 14th, 2006 at 8:05 pm
some truths, but lots of bullshit,
i assume most of u forgot that rollerblading started out as a poser grabbing sport, it was a sold out sport also, but people like this guy made rumors to get back into the limelight.
September 14th, 2006 at 8:19 pm
it wasn’t a sold out sport u idiot, shut up
September 14th, 2006 at 8:23 pm

September 14th, 2006 at 8:26 pm
fuck that let some old guy say some shit like that to me i beat the fuck out his bitchass fuckin pussy dosent know shit about the sport of rollerblading id like to see him even come close to doin the shit rollers can do
September 14th, 2006 at 8:46 pm
everything he said was right! except aggression. cos we are building now what was already built for skateboarding 30 years ago, so keep working just keep working!
September 14th, 2006 at 8:49 pm
he brings up very good points.
September 14th, 2006 at 9:24 pm
Also the guys name is not GARETT thats me, the guys name was somthing like Grimcity, you guys are making me look like the fucking skateboarder who said all this, I just quoted him.
September 14th, 2006 at 9:28 pm
Look guys, this is just a guy, giving critics to another guy’s words…This doesn’t suddently mean SKATEBOARDING VS. ROLLING, its means frikkin dumbfuck Arlo Eisenberg vs. an oldschool skateboarder, who i bet, has more clever things to say in like 5 minutes, than Tardlo cold ever say throughout some rediculous rollerblading documentary…You guys need to remember: Arlo is NOT rollerblading, he’s just some old dude, who barely skates anymore, and thinks that he’s the frikkin spokesman of this sport…Fuck it man, i’d really like to see ANY skateboarder try to take out Dustin Latimer instead. I bet he has a lot more intelligent stuff to say aobut this sport, instead of just putting on some ugly pink baseballcap, and sit and talk bullshit in what seems to be forever in some waaaay too over-edited skatedocumentary. Guys, stop worrying about frikkin tardlo and skateboarders. WE HAVE OTHER THINGS TO DO, GOD DAMNIT….SUCH AS FUCKING SKATING AND NOT CARING!!! Man, dont you see, things wont ever work out, as long as the people, who are supposed to do something about this situation in this sport, are just sitting on their fat asses talking bullshit about how we’re supposed to do stuff…Shut up man, just shut up if you arent clever…
September 14th, 2006 at 9:28 pm
yeah rollerblades have been around long then a skateboard has
September 14th, 2006 at 9:43 pm
TAKE THIS SHIT OFF RN!
September 14th, 2006 at 9:49 pm
This makes me only laugh, if u count all the swearing….
Childish behaviour…..
Why the hell skateboarders and bladers just HAVE TO HATE EACH OTHER?
It’s childish envy only.
Ofcourse skateboarder cannot grind as long as rollerblader, that is the thing rollerbladers can do better perioid.
Although rollerbladers can’t do flips, but so fucking what, we should be glad of the things we do and not just like say skater are all assholes.
Not all of them hate us like not all of us hate skateboarders, as some of us have other things to say than this:” fuck i hate skateboarding wood pushers sucks…
Some of us are mature and can think whit brains not just be dickheads.
I am glad rollerblading is not “trend”
If it would be I wouldn’t want to do it:)
Thank you very much and everyone have a nice day thats all i got to say for this topic.
September 14th, 2006 at 9:51 pm
sk8boarding is so popular because of theese tony hawks and stuff showing on tv so much it, so every little kid who wanna be that kind cool buys a sk8board un doing the stuff, but its so stupid, you need to do what you like to do not whats cool doah.. i think that sk8boarding dont need to have skill so much as luck..everyway i think rollerblading is the shit, from full style show to tricks, just like said in freestyle rolling..
September 14th, 2006 at 10:02 pm
One thing, he said was true…
Culture just kinda happens. you cant “make” it happen.
September 14th, 2006 at 10:12 pm
but he didnt talk about barely dead…
September 14th, 2006 at 10:20 pm
fuck this guy, why is this even on hear, if rollerblading is the same as skateboarding why is it how he says gayy, we never started shit with skateboarders why the fuck do they have to talk shit about our sport when were totally cool with them, look at viberlux they have a skateboarrd edit and that nike commercial that was on here i think they should rethink hatting us sooo god damn much
September 14th, 2006 at 10:37 pm
I feel that if the guy had to be that negative then he must have alot of insecurities…sux that people have to resort to that type of behavior.I say if udont like it then keep your negative opinions to yourself.
September 14th, 2006 at 10:38 pm
Something I’ve noticed whil designing a skatepark with some skateboarders is that they cannot accept that their sport will decline in popularity. This will not necesairly happen do to rollerblading increasing in popularity, but because of skateboarding losing it’s identity. Anything that threatens that identity will be seen as the enemy, even with no good reason.
I’m glad we’ve got rollmodels like Julio, Piss and Eisenberg who treat this like something serious which we can’t let drop out of our hands. More people like them will be needed.
September 14th, 2006 at 10:38 pm
cul‧ture [kuhl-cher] Pronunciation Key -
–noun 1. the quality in a person or society that arises from a concern for what is regarded as excellent in arts, letters, manners, scholarly pursuits, etc.
I looked this up on dictionary.com. Our culture is magazines, videos, rollerblading, how rollerblading affects us. you build culture by doing whatever the fuck you want such as skateboarding did and still does(magazines, videos, viva la bam [FAG]). fuck yeah our sport or art or whatever the balls you want to call it is excellent, he said it himself. its neeto, yippie. someone send this to the ignorant fuck
September 14th, 2006 at 11:20 pm
Twenty bucks says his favorite movie is “Lords of Dogtown”
What an idiot.
September 14th, 2006 at 11:35 pm
i think people should concentrate on fun with what u do than anything else! when u start thinkin about gettin sponsored or becoming famous. it becomes more of a obligation to everything else than just rolling and havin fun!
September 15th, 2006 at 12:04 am
Is this guy reviewing a skate vid before it is released… it was a f**King trailor.
September 15th, 2006 at 12:22 am
i will form my own opinion when i see the dvd. can’t really judge a whole dvd on a 2 minute trailor, or form a vaild opinion when you really have no idea what rollerblading is all about or what it has gone through. i can be quick to judge lords of dogotown on the trailor…it was not cool at all.
September 15th, 2006 at 12:41 am
ya that guys is a moron. creating a culture doesnt mean you create it on false precepts. Rollerblading has roots and it has a culture.
September 15th, 2006 at 12:46 am
I hate when people look at things and judge things with out trying to look at thing at a different point of view. This guy has grown up believing everything that someone told him. So dont get too made at ingorance at its best. He is just a FULL TIME HATER and nothing else
September 15th, 2006 at 3:18 am
we need to bring style back, less tap-dancing on handycaps. there are soo many possibilities that we overlook. kids only do the tricks that they see pros doing in videos in fear of being made fun of by their peers.
September 15th, 2006 at 4:25 am
people forget that skateboarding is more like roller skating than surfing. if you’ve ever watched dogtown and zboys you get to see how chachie skateboarding was for the first 20 years. not to say that they weren’t doing cool shit. but skateboarding started out all roller derby style.
September 15th, 2006 at 5:17 am
this guy talks about culture likes its a race. he’s fukin retarded. they have a poser setup. andybody that can ollie thinks there xtreme and where bam and element shit like that. us we learn hard tricks wear clothings from actaul skate companys designed and owned by skating. thats suport and thats community.
September 15th, 2006 at 6:31 am
Can people please quit quoting the baton thing from brain fear gone? It was funny the first time I heard it in the video, but what, all most 6 years later its kind of lost its novelty…
As for his comments, just an outsider looking in. If he really does not care why did he make such a long response to it?…We are just stepping on their feet again and its make them uncomfortable, plus they dont like it when we think that we dont have much in common with skateboarders any more….Because they are the cool ones after all…..

First of I agree you can’t make a cuture up, it evolves. As for rollerblading not having history I think that it clearly does in rollerskating, ice skating grated its not as cool, as a derivitive as surfing is. But hey rollerskating, ice skating is a starting point, and I’ve never once heard a rollerblader thinking any different. Heck if it weren’t for mighty ducks movies I don’t think I would’ve ever started blading(I’m from OZ and we don’t get much ice here) my blading roots come from street hockey, and I roll with many older bladers that started out the same way maybe not because of the movie but definetly street hockey and what does it derive from ice hockey. Is this not history is this not evolution? What I can do on skates today if I saw that 10+years ago I would thought what a weirdo but the ’sport’ or activity evolved into it, it didn’t just fall from the sky.
Skateboarders evolved the sport into what we see today. If memory serves Tony Hawk was shunned because of tricks he did were thought of as ‘circus tricks’ but now stuff he invented is pretty much standard today. Soon enough people will see that blading isn’t going to go away we have a culture we don’t need to force it, the fact that blading isn’ big isn’t mainstream isn’t an issue. It’s not a question of passion as a roller we all love to do it, we don’t do it cause its the ‘in thing’ or to be accepted we do it cause it makes us feel good. Blading is bigger than the clothes we wear, music we listen to, or any other way you wish to pigeon hole us as. Fashion comes and goes as does musical trends and blading was big when grunge was cool and we even went through a hip hop trend and now this EMO fashion trend and it’ll lve on into the next fashion trend or musical trend cause its bigger than that its a lifestyle. Its more than a tangable thing surfers look different to what they did in the 60’s but the one thing they have in common is the surfing just as we bladers do wether it be a hip hop, emo roller we’re all still bladers just shut the fuck up and roll and let the activity speak for itself.

skateboarding is hard but it sucks big dick its crap all the tricks are the same bboorriinngg they cant really go big they got limited tricks and i bet this gay is only saying it cause he does it but if hed started rollerblading first he would of preffered that instead but hes too old and gay and set in his roots to try it now

what-a-retard.
September 15th, 2006 at 3:10 pm
A lot of you guys are comparing skateboarding to rollerblading and saying rollerblading is better because of this and that…
just keep in mind that they are two totally different sports that can’t really effectvly be compared that way. i do both, (rolelrblade mostly, like 95% of the time) but its like difference between hockey and football or something.
September 15th, 2006 at 3:13 pm
I feel that this dude kinda missed the point when interpreting Arlo. Yeah obviously rollerblading derived a certain amount if not a majority of its culture from skateboarding. But isn’t that part of what he’s saying? That fundamentally because of this skateboarding influenced culture, rollerbladers have been segregated as unworthy to enter the action sports criteria. (and yes as skateboarding is part of it) And that because of this unacceptance, the past 10 years have left the rolling industry struggling for its survival, and consequently initiating the development of its own culture. Fuck i used some big words some1 give me a clap.
September 15th, 2006 at 5:29 pm
hmmm…..ya fuck that guy hes a dick. rollerblading isnt a ripoff of skateboarding considering skateboarders used the wheels and trucks from skates to make skateboards when werent being made anymore. and how are rollerbladers trying to create a culture? you cant create a culture it does happen naturally with people attributing to it in their own way. this asshole dosnt seem to realize that what we’re doing is what all other sports did when they first came around. and wat the hell is some old skateboarder doing on rollernews.com in the first place? i guess its fine for him to look at what rollerblading is today but to come on here just to bitch about seems kinda fucked up. he needs to get a job or hobby or somthin cause just bitchin on our sited is a waste of time.
September 15th, 2006 at 5:41 pm
I have never seen a skateboarder wearing XXXL shirts and baggy sweatpants. But let’s be real, what exactly is the ‘rolling culture’? Is it wearing tight pants? That whole style of dress was around longer than rolling in its current form. It certainly isn’t the wearing of baggy clothing because that was borrowed from hip-hop. Rolling has no culture. Skateboarding has no culture. Can any of you determine who is a skateboarder or roller blader in a room filled with people? When you take away the board and the skates, are these people so different?
And for the record, razors and remz and USD and [insert company here] are made in China.
September 15th, 2006 at 5:46 pm
early skateboards where made of wood and rollerskates!
so isn’t skateboard a compenation of surf and rollerblading when it first started?
September 15th, 2006 at 5:49 pm
This guy is the prime example of an ignorant person that hates on somthing just for the sake of it. How can you make such an asumption on such a big culture and your not apart of it or have never experienced. Im tired of ppl comparing it to other sports like skateboarding. ITS A COMPLETLY DIFFERENT SPORT, GET OFF IT! its like comparing football n basketball. So to this guy i say stfu cause u have no clue wat ur talking about. and i say NO to rollerblading is ripping off skateboarding, if thats tru then so is every other xtreme sport out there. stop sellin out rollerblading cuase its in the PROCESS of being developed. so instead of critisizing and hating how bout u become apart of the solution and not the problem, then ull have nothing to bitch about. PEACE
September 15th, 2006 at 5:58 pm
Im sorry but this article had me very upset id just like to add that skateboarding now or backthen will NEVER be as real as rollerblading is rite now, yes we were a bunch of posers back in the day but look @ us now. honestly WHO rollerblades to be cool? NOBODY! the ppl that do it do it cause they LOVE it. i will roll for hte rest of my life and call out kids like this guy that like to run thier mouth, and the funny thing is they’re all the same, you call em out, they shut up once they realize ur willin to back up wat u do w/ur argument or fists. once they see that passion they respect me, no diff from this dueche. and once they see a rollerblader throw down a ginormous trick that a skateboarder could never even dream of, they fall to thier knees in aw, so this guy is just another punk.

September 15th, 2006 at 9:30 pm
Yea the old schooler does have a point. He obviously sounds that way because rolling has not been around for long enough so I expect that response. It’s much like the grommets who walk in this forum and bomb everything rolling has to offer because they have too many expectations from an industry that is still growing and trying to figure itself out. If we had say 30+ years of rolling then yes I’d mos def see a difference and perhaps a difference in opinion for everyone but don’t expect in the next 5 years things will be super great for us. We still need more time. So haters keep hating. At least the old school skateboarder can back up some of what he says.
September 15th, 2006 at 9:58 pm
jesus! another skateboarder has just finished watching one too many episodes of JACKASS… hmm i guess this is part of the culture he is talking about..
what makes me laugh all the time is reading these small tantrums some skateboarders have about inline skating… i mean who really cares what they think??? yeah he has an issue and is best for him to find his own shrink rather than us helping him define his psycho probs with inline skating….
peace to all our skateboarding cousins and chill :) you keep grinding those 2 inch rails… those tricks look real cute on MTV :)
September 16th, 2006 at 1:59 am
damn you guys write a lot !!!!
September 16th, 2006 at 10:16 am
Fuck what this fag says. Who the fuck came out with the statement that rollerblading derives from sk8boarding??? First of all old school sk8ers used roller skates and wood bords to build themselfs sk8boards, so I believe sk8boarding derives from roller sk8ting and surfing. Secondly, in skateboarding, there are no new tricks, nothin’, it has become a commercial industry more than a sport. There are many who do this sport because that they think it is cool. Well it is not. Doing a sport that u love and respect that is cool not just beeing a fake. In rollerblading, this kind of shit doesnt happen, cos once u try rollerblading, u fall in love with it. So fuck this gay retarded sk8boarder and keep rolling. A culture builds itself and ppl can’t expect rollerblading to have a culture after just 10 years. In time we will have our own culture and hopefully the respect we deserve as bladers, for the sport we love and for our dedication for it. And if we don’t, fuck it!!! I will allways love it, its my life. Sk8boarding is a fake bullshit so called extrem sport and the only “boarding” sport i respect is snowboarding. Big up 4 all rollerbladers. Keep rollin’ and fuck sk8boarders.

September 16th, 2006 at 5:18 pm
At the end of the day that’s the most ignorant thing I’ve read on any topic from someone whose supposedly a fully grown bloke-he’s probably an American which is where alot of superficial bollocks is ranted upon (no offence), and maybe the rivalry is fiercer over there than it is here in England between the two sports. He’s simply trying to demean rollerblading to look cool when at the end of the day none of this shit about what/who’s better or more authentic will ever matter. We’re all insignificant grains of sand in the scale of things so we might as well enjoy whatever we choose to do and not worry about strings of piss who try to put you down, just laugh in their faces.

September 18th, 2006 at 1:50 am
I get the feeling that he pre-meditated his responses in this interview, using big words and bad insults and such.
September 18th, 2006 at 5:32 am
Hey I just wanted to say this to help expose these stupid ass retarded people who think that skateboarding is so cool just because it’s been around for like 40 years now. The first pair of rollerblades were made in Paris in the 1700’s and even though we are a derivitive of rollerskating we are all together a completely different beast at that even. While yes skateboarding is just a cheap impression of surfing we are unique and being that some narrow-minded people who probably never graduated high school seem to find it outrageous for us as a collective group or a community to say that we need a culture to grow, which by the way only way a society can truly thrive is build moments in history that can forever be mentions as something momentous, (Such as Danny Way gapping the Great Wall of China, or That sorry ass 900 that Tony Hawk did back when we were already doing 1440’s in X-Games) We likewise need to do something so stupid (Literally) that it causes people to stop and focus on not only who we are but what we’re all about, from our roots to where we’ll be going. Yeah skateboarders would love to think that we are a cheap rip off of their sport but those stupid ass fucks have yet to realize two things… they think they make fun of our sport but no they really are insulting our manhood, you don’t hear people saying that football is gay and so are the people that play it because that would be an insult to anyone who partakes of that sport as to call them fags, no the smart person would say that they don’t like football not that it’s gay just because they have no talent in that particular sport, of course skateboarding is hard but it’s so much easier than blading cause you don’t have to actually dedicate and stick to a damn thing, they always can just say fuck it and walk away from any trick where as we are one with our instruments and therefore cannot just quit because we lack the balls to finish anything all the way through. Snowboarding is a rip off of skateboarding and they’re better than skateboarding too, why is it that Shawn White already pulled a fucking 1080 and can go bigger on snowboard than anyone else on skateboard. Your pro skateboarders can’t really do any switch-up tricks, and a little kid can beat all of the street pros in X-Games who have been riding for years, give me a fuckin break SKateboarding fuckin sucks and so do the neanderthals who think they could dare talk shit without actually seriously trying our sport. Yeah were new compared to the other action sports but we are still one of the most dangerous.Fuckin dumb ass skateboarders talking about how much more fun it was to watch a fucking car race and call it extreme than watch inline street or vert. you’re more stupid than George Bush for thinking that stupid ass shit.
September 18th, 2006 at 6:27 am
also to the guy who said you can’t tell a skateboarder from a blader because of clothes. First of all Culture isn’t exactly a fashion only word. the meaning of culture to put it into lamen terms is just moments in history that are big enough to be remembered, no matter if it’s by art, history, music, sports, or in this case mmoments in sports history. Danny Way deliberately jumped the great wall to help the skateboarding culture not die. Tony Hawk stuff keeps getting played not because he was trying to help his skateboarding culture, but the fuckin asshole at ESPN who’s an old skateboarder that’s afraid of his good years looking more and more like a waste of time wants to rekindle the thought of him being cool when he was younger and continued to replay that gay ass attempt of 6 times before he landed the sorry as trick that I can do as well and I’m not even sponsored.
you people say that what he says is true well it’s not. We started yes from the rollerblade company as a dance team and yes we grew tired and more bold in pushing our limits, so we hit the half pipes and handrails and ledges, but skateboarding came after biking was already using half pipes, after surfing, the movie talks about it(Lords of Dogtown which is the most boring an hate filled movie I’ve seen in a long time skateboarders need to go to some fuckin anger management classes) the used pools because they couldn’t catch waves 24/7 they are rip offs of more than just surfing, they’re a rip off of biking cause of the ramps, they’re a rip off from rollerskating since that’s how they were first riding and that’s why they’re truly mad. We evolved. They’re a rip off of everything uncool that they try to make cool. hate, anger, lack of control, etc….with all their magazines and all the help that tv gives them they still are shit for balls and stuck to a small amount of tricks. Every fuckin big brother and skateboarding and transworld looks the same kickflip or some sorry ass small grind. that new show stunt junkies shows bob burnquist doing this big ass roll in to a launch and 50/50’s a thick ass hump rail that’s perfectly aimed up and isnt’ far at all and he only hits like a little bit and then bails from his board he opens up his parachute and lands at the bottom of the grand canyon. It would have been sick if he switched it up and actually grinded the whole rail, oh and actually had landed at the bottom with his board under his feet, otherwise that was all called a fuck up. :)
September 18th, 2006 at 12:12 pm
they (and i don’t mean all skateboarders, just those narrowminded haters) say they have roots, they have a natural grown-up culture. but just think, such “cultivated” ppl, why do they have so much hard time to feel the life and expression that rollerblading obviously has in it? there’s something fundametaly wrong with their precious “culture”…
September 18th, 2006 at 6:03 pm
It´s not a culture? So my life is a mistake? hahuauhahuaha I work for inline skating, live for inline skating… everything in my life has something to do with inline skating. I live inside this culture and I´m part of it´s roots and creation… So I won´t say anything because I´m sure of myself and my life.
Man… please someone tell him that skateboarding came from quad skating + surf ….
The lack of respect is impressive. This skateboardes reflects what 99% of the boarders think… and I don´t need their respect. So fuck off !!!
September 19th, 2006 at 12:37 am
skateboardes need to get over them selves WHO GIVES A FUCK IF YOU HAVE TO OLLIE TO GET OFF THE GROUND NOONE EVER WON ANY THING FOR OLLING SKATEBOARDERS SHOULD B THANING SKATERS NO QUADS = NO SKAEBOARD SO U WOULD B SKATING GET OVR UR SELF
September 19th, 2006 at 2:09 am
hahahahahahahaha this old fart has to be retarded or just plain stupid… fuck him… let him be… he knows that everyone that wears skateboarding brands doesnt skate board… thats the only reason why the skateboard companies are just so famous and rich and all the fukkin skateboarders can wipe their asses with 100 dollar bills anfd its beacuase people just buy skateboarding brand clothing cuz everyone is wearing that shit…
September 19th, 2006 at 6:42 am
i took time to read all of your comments and some of you have points and some of you are just dumbasses tryin to be funny. i do agree with the fact that culture happens naturaly but if you do need to give it a little push. skateboarding. how did this whole thing start. in the fucking dryed out pool in LA. some “hardcore cool kids” wanted to bust their ass in front of a couple of girls by rolling aroung on a short surfboard with wheels. if skateboarders ever try to tell rollerbladers that were not legit or question our roots then those ignorant fags should know their own first. that little push that im talkng about is people who love their sport and are willing to put shit on the line for it. skateboarding had its tony hawk and whoever else. those guys tryed new things and “pushed” skateboarding into what it is now which is what rollerblading pros like chris haffey and alex broskow and shima, stockwell, elliot, julio, murda and the list is endless. these people are doing the same thing that those first skateboarding pros were doing 40 or so years ago. and im sure that the skateboarders from 40 years ago that know what its like to build a sport from scratch, would more then respect what our pros are doing now. and those faggot ass bitches like the guy who wrote this article, believe the truth is what they think is the truth are the ones that are holding rollerblading down. ive been to this skatepark in orlando florida called mesh and theres a couple of those dickheads there. they are like 18 to 25 and all they do all day is bitch at little rollerblader kids. and when you see those fags get up and try their ollies and kickflips, they bust their ass like they were falling of the empire state building. and those little kids that they pick on are forced out of rollerblading and into this fake sport called “skateboarding” because they simply think that fitting in is what they need to be doing instead of doing what they like/love/want to do which is rollerblading. having seen shit like this, i could proboly imagine that the person who wrote this is one of those old guys that comes to a skatepark and takes everyones turn, even his fellow skateboarders to do a couple of pumps on the quaterpipe where as rollerbladers let each other go and do their shit just out of love for one another(not in a gay way for all you fags that are giggling). skateboarding has become a contest about who looks the coolest which rollerblading must never become or we will fall right down the same loophole that skateboarding has. my point is this, in my opinion rollerblading is at a crossroad where we as rollerbladers need to push it in the right derection, and that is what i think “building a culture around this really is
September 19th, 2006 at 3:50 pm
rollerblading is not compareble with skateboarding, so drop it. roll for fun! don’t worry or think about skateboarders or other people who have critics about us.
as i said we aren’t compareble to skateboarding it’s like comparing tennis and football no one does that why keep people comparing us with skateboarders?
September 19th, 2006 at 9:51 pm

September 20th, 2006 at 9:03 am
oh my gosh it happens all over again….
I can’t remember who it was in the last black market vid that said “rollerblading is a very reactive industry” damn this is so true.
When some fucking insignificiant outsider talks shit on what looks to be the maddest rollerblading video to come out in many a year, the main rollerblading website wets there pants and puts it on the front page?? As if giving somebody like credit, or even authority to comment.
no wonder rollerblading is dead, the industry kills the vibe with there fear of looking uncool in front of some skateboarder.
oh yeh, might I say this, CULTURE IS BUILT. Do you think that the peeps at Daily bread(RIP) or Unity or Be-mag or senate just sat back and let the culture grow out of the fucking concrete??
culture is just a reflection of what individuals put into the “sport” what about UCON? IMYTA?? do these companies and what they bring to the culture of rollerblading just grow naturally, no way.
it will grow, but only when peole have already put in there own time and dedicate so much of there lives to creating it, And do you know what, if more people decided to put more life into rolling the culture would show this.
to someone who wasn’t part of building the culture, it would look like this thing just grew out of the ground, well this says more about our skateboarder than the pro’s who talked in BD. they are teh ones helping to build this culture and taking it on there back, investing in companies and putting there soul into art and events that will be the essence and recognition of this Culture.
that was rambled out but I hope you get the picture.

September 26th, 2006 at 9:48 pm
I haven’t seen the film but I’m going to comment regardless.
“Anything “built” around it will be artificial… “culture” is something that manifests itself naturally… culture just happens. Any and every “culture” you try to make will be complete and utter bullshit.”
The skater is right here, but I feel we have a culture already, and the culture that “needs built” I feel (echoing a previous point) refers to the growth of the discipline/money within it/companies.
But our “culture” in regards to overall dress sense/musical style etc. is constantly changing. “SEb” said a lot ot true shit…..many rollers are directly influenced by the tricks they see in the IMYTA, what their favourite pros are wearing, etc etc.
That’s a huge part of the reason why there are “stereotypes” of skaters
Like most people associate a hugely baggily-clothed skater with tech grinds and huge gaps, while associating a “tightly-dressed” skater with thread-the-needles, creative skating etc.
I’m glad that our discipline doesn’t have one main collective visually recognisable group of trend followers (apart from this emo trend at the moment) but rollers WILL follow what is “IN”.
Kids are wearin’ tight pants because Farmer and Stockwell do it, copying their tricks, buying their products, etc.
Remember how huge Senate used to be? It had the best rollers, “best” gear etc.
The increase in roller-owned companies is leading to diversity, giving people a more individual choice and weaning out any one outstandingly popular “type” of roller or fashion.
As for our culture……….our culture and our history are the fact that we roll in the face of adversity, being hated upon by so many boarders (although many boarders are some of the coolest people I know, I roll with other rollers BMXers and skaters alike, fuck you if that makes me a “traitor”) and our unique approach to what we do, how beautiful our discipline looks and, best of all, the unity with our equipment.
I respect boarding, I do, I hate the haters but most skaters thta I know (guess I’m just lucky?) feel that we’re all out to achieve the same goal, land tricks etc.
BUT.
Skating is kicking a board around.
We are completely at one with our fruitboots, increasing indiviuduals tyles all over the globe.
Long live rolling!

first of all, this was not an interview..this was taken from a bulletin board on a skateboarding website. and second of all if you dont care about skateboarding then why waste your time talking shit about it, when you could be “blading”. Im a skateboarder and i could give less of a fuck about rollerblading, but regardless i dont disrespect anyone because they blade. do what you want and fuck everybody else’s opinion

October 10th, 2006 at 8:21 pm
Why are people bothering to write down and portray such bullshit….who fucking cares…I have to sit and read that shit?? no i dont have to sit and read it but there seems to be a constant stream of ancient ideologies about what rollerblading ‘is’ and what its future, destiny whatever the fuck holds….Rollerblading exsists because people like myself and my boys LOVE to do it….noone cares about our culture and how it is supposedly ripping off skateboarding…yeh theres plenty muthafuckers wearing drainpipe jeans..etc etc…fuck sake…u stupid cunt..such a stupid cunt…Who gives a fuck if u were skating before rollerblading was a ‘thing’ what does that matter… it aint only rollerbladers that have to climb out of a bowl, the fact is nobody gives a fuck thats down for skating…i skate with many boarders and have done since i first started skating so its all good…anyone that shares such fucking ridiculous scentiments are obviously cock smokers…old school cock smoker…u aint a skater…and u dont have a fucking clue about it
October 19th, 2006 at 12:08 am
FUCK HIM!!!!!!!!
October 26th, 2006 at 6:31 am
I started skateboarding for a while then bought a pair of fitness skates and started jumoping with a crappy homemade kicker ….at that particular time I fell in love with rollerblading and quit skateboarding.
the thing you need to know is where I came from there werent any other skateboarders or rollerbladers …..no tv …I actually taught I was inventing something with my rollerblade….
my point is I choose rollerblading over skateboarding only by following my heart and didnt had any influence at alll…
follow your instinct
October 27th, 2006 at 10:41 am
I don’t have anything against fucking skateboarding[to be honest i dont want anything to do with it] but when you see an old fucking moaner on a fucking skateboard dissin our sport and way of life it does make you hate skateboarding and everything that surrounds it!!!!!!!!!

I like to call it skating ,but when you say that to people who don’t know better , theyassume you mean skateboard( I ve had too explain that too many times.) So I say ” I Like aggressive inline”.
