at least somone is doing somthing for rolling and not for them selfs i think its a great thing not like some people who only think about them selfs so keep it up guys you are the best and the haters cant understand the most important thing in this sport and thats the love for rolling so let them say what they say but understand this that they will never understand for they are the fallen ones and will never get there wings…….
It is awesome that they are doing something! I love the photos, but the whole layout is just very amateurish.(to much bevel and emboss! fake paper texture etc.) If these guys take some design classes, and maybe some adobe indesign classes it has the possibility of being something awesome!
Who gives a fuck if its not the greatest designs or layout. People are so caught up in all that shit. Just like when people complain about the quality of filming or editing in an edit. We arn’t all graphic designers and professional photographers, we are rollerbladers. Some people need to shut the fuck up about all that shit! At least these guys are doing something positive for skating. Great idea guys, keep it up and good luck! We need more magazines in rollerblading.
yeh I like this mag and like that it isnt high quality and whatnot. I enjoy high quality videos and photos etc. but everything doesnt need to be like that. It is the content that counts, think of the great skate videos in Rollings history that are definately not high quality. Im not saying this zine is great, it is what it is- an interesting insight into the NYC skate scene and they are promoting Rollerblading. I also think high quality publications are very good for our industry.
the presentation of our media represents the quality of our sport. if it is shown more professionally, then outsider eyes will look at us more seriously. its just that simple.
” if it is shown more professionally, then outsider eyes will look at us more seriously. its just that simple” Who cares , this is a free, non profit magazine made for us. If you don’t like it, you don’t like it that’s that, but the outside world? Really? Like we started skating to get approval….It’s an argument I hear too much these days….
Much respect to Angelo Ferrer and his crew for putting this together. It looks like a lot of hard work and Ferrer is figuring out his vision one issue at a time. And it is great to see NYC come together for this project!
But to be honest, the presentation is lacking. This issue looks similar to the 1st and 2nd, so it is obvious that there is no progression in technical skill whatsoever. Anybody who defends such mediocre work is only enabling more people to put out average crap and Rollerblading doesn’t need this kind of representation.
Thanks for the comments guys. Me and my wife have a 15month babyboy and both work 5 days a week, Its a miracle that we made it up to issue3, but for the love of my sport we will continue as best as WE can, there is no group or help from outside sponcers or editors or graphic designers, so far the only ones helping are my wife and the skaters who throw down there skills for me to capture. If anyone would like to share there free time and help out with layout suggestions or anything that they feel were missing here please contact us at nyrolling@yahoo.com thank you for checking our magazine and taking the time to see it. issue4 is going to have our best content yet so stay tuned.. peace fellow rollers
i totally agree with myspace.com/djwrekshopmusic says …
hes dead right ,,, we are rollerbladers ! anyone remember how box magazine and the real old daily breads were !??! and even old english mags like dna and the first unity mags ??!!! it doesnt matter bout designs and shit ! the main thing i think is your getting the point across and getting skating out there !
PROPS to Angelo !!
i really dont care about super artsy looks, or how people outside see it, FUCK approval, i dont skate for approval, i’m tired of people crying about this, if you skate for approval or worry about the rest you must be stupid ass looser.
about the design, i see that the creator doesn’t care much about it since the content is what matters, i agree. but in that case then don’t even bother on trying to “design” it or to try and make it look “nice” , just concentrate on making it clear, logical, readable, and forget trying to put in colors or weird fonts. or, get someone with some design experience to help you out.
As a graphic designer running a non-profit zine on rollerblading, I can’t stress the need for readability, visual interest, and layouts that emphasize the content. Typography is more important than most people realize. But I applaud the effort for east coast rollers to put their skating out there. The photos are pretty good, and they could really look nice in a professional layout. So in the same way I ask for people to help contribute to RollZine, I am offering my services to the Art of Rolling to help design a section for them (for free obviously). And maybe they would like to submit some photos to RollZine so I can feature more east coast skating. http://www.rollzine.com
