Chris haffey: Shock Interview

What do you think about the current state of blading “culture”?

In what ways could we make it more robust and interesting to the outside world?

That’s a hard question. I don’t think we need to change much at all. Its not that it needs to be more interesting, but that the outside world just needs to be shown how interesting it already is.

The thing is you can’t force feed it to people. I think something as simple as having events with the right format and the right courses (to keep it impressive to an outside eye) in the right places would help a lot. Places like Venice beach or any boardwalk of any beach for that matter.

Places with a stupid amount of foot traffic. They see how tight skating is, and I think you can get a good sense of the culture from an event like that. Especially if its less of a contest and more of just a showcase of tight blading.

If its relaxed and all the skaters are having a good time it will come across to all the people that walk by. I know when I used to go to NISS at Venice Beach I always wanted to get better just so I could be hanging out with everyone cause it looked like they were all having a good time on and off the course. THE SHOCK LADIES NIGHT FEAT SHANNON RODGERS

SHANNON RODGERS

I have noticed that in blading there is a heavy imbalance between the amount of males and females.

A female on blades is the exception; men seem to rule the sport in every aspect—from shredding to company ownership to sheer numbers. I take this to be a supreme bum-rush. What are we doing wrong?

One time Frank Stoner and I had a conversation about this and I think he put it best. In sports like surfing, skiing, and snowboarding, there is a strong female following.

Granted they are still male dominated sports, but the ratio of male to females in those sports out weighs rollerblading. Anyways, those activities are more family oriented and I think that’s one reason the females are plentiful there and not in rollerblading. Families with little girls will go on a ski trip every winter, exposing that little girl to the snow, balancing her ski’s, witnessing demo’s, etc.

That type of exposure at a young age makes all the difference in the long run. But, the rollerblader girls get pretty spoiled for sure.

Chris Farmer is better than you at rollerblading and is also good at getting hammered. Read this in-depth interview to learn how you too can one day blade and get tanked.

PHOTOS BY CHRIS AND JERO THE DAMAJA.

What is particularly attractive about drinking to you? Why do you like to get tanked?
Nothing attractive, i just like to do it. i guess one plus is that it helps me sleep better, i fucking suck at sleeping…

If you only have $10.00 what do you buy at the liquor store for a night of fun filled black outs?
Well, since nightrain costs about 5 bucks a bottle in minnesota, i’d get two of those and ask questions in the morning.

Whats your favorite whiskey? jin beans. [...]
