Richard Taylor Memorial Skate Park vandalised

Family and friends disgust after Barry’s Richard Taylor Memorial Skate Park is vandalised

The mother and friends of a Barry skating champion who died tragically are appealing for information about the ‘heartless’ people who desecrated his Memorial Skate Park.

Richard Taylor’s mum Gaynor and friends Scott Wilcox and Christopher Morris are urging anyone who may know something to come forward, after graffiti was daubed on ramps at the popular facility.

The park was established in memory of 23-year-old skater Richard, who died on August 7, 2004 after a freak accident.

The vandalism is believed to have taken place some time around January 21 and 22. [...]

Richard Taylor Memorial Skatepark – Clearing of site and construction beginning!

Richard Taylor Memorial Skatepark

Sämi Raimann, 15.06.2007

Well the long awaited news is out! Next week we will be dismantling the old Knap Skatepark and any money gained from the scrap will be going to the Fund!

To date we have £51,000 in the fund with about £1,500 due to come from various donors – but I’m sure we will be able to raise the necessary £2,500 in time I’m attaching the plan for the skate park for you to display.

This plan costs £60K but as we have capped the fund raising now at £55K the long quarterpipe attached to the midi ramp is the same width as the midi, the spine ramp is smaller and there is a small piece taken off the jump box combination.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council are also putting in £30,000 for the excavation and surfacing works. The Richard Taylor Memorial Fund are only contributing to the equipment costs.

Week commencing 25th of June 2007 the engineers will be on site to begin digging up and then preparing to lay the new surface and then Andy Peerless of Fearless Ramps will be on site around 20th July. The official opening of the Richard Taylor Memorial Skatepark, The Knap, Barry, is scheduled for Sunday 26th August 2007

Richard Taylor, UK Transplant : Life Story

Tuesday, December 26th, 2006

rich taylor

“We were proud to agree to donating our son’s organs. It was the natural and right thing to do.”

John and Gaynor Taylor’s son Richard had lived life to the full, and they had no hesitation agreeing to their son giving others a future.

An internationally renowned in-line skater, Richard Taylor thrilled fans around the world, with his skill, energy and positive attitude.

Aged only 23, he had already achieved eight years as a professional skater. In 2004 he not only won the UK National In-Line Skating championships for the second year in a row, he also took the British Freestyle Skiing Big Air competition title in France, having started freestyle skiing just a few months before. Then, only a month after his skating double, he was critically injured while skating in his home town of Barry in South Wales, and was in a coma for five days before his death.

“His grandmother knew he had signed onto the Organ Donor Register, but we didn’t, although we’d discussed organ donation as a family when Richard was a teenager,” said Gaynor. “It is vital to talk about your wishes to your next of kin and it felt so good to know that he had made the effort to register.”

Richard Taylor : Memorial Comp
by Laura Huntley / Rollmodel

As most rollers will know unity recently ceased publishing, I wrote an article for them on the Richard Taylor memorial jam which took place on the 9th Sept 2006.

Most skaters have heard of Richard Taylor and for those who donated here’s the lowdown :

Rich Taylor was one of the most charismatic, energetic and talented people in the industry. He was very popular amongst all, an amazing skater and an inspiration for positivity. At the young age of 23, Rich sadly passed away in August 2004. Since then memorial comps have been held for him in order to raise money for a skate park in his memory.

Alongside the comps money is raised via red memorial RT bands sporting his favorite quote “its all good”. Skaters are united at events such as NASS as you can easily spot a fellow roller sporting one, united in Richard’s memory.

Gaynor Taylor still going strong alongside son Rob and the aid of Anthony Canning arranged the third comp in his memory The Da Richie Code. Continuing the themed comps he used to run at the park.
