Mushroom Blading Volumes 3 & 4

Mushroom Blading Volume 3

In 2007, mediocre (and Canadian) rollerbladers Joey McGarry and Todd McInernery started the ‘Mushroom Blading’ video series. Since then Mushroom Blading hasn’t become anything leading or celebrated… nor are they really part of a devoted, tight-knit community of skaters across the globe… They’re just guys who like to rollerblade.

Following two years of filming (during spare time from their real jobs) usually across the same spots multiple times in bad weather… Todd and Joey mind-dump another collection of ideas in the form of Mushroom Blading Volume 3.

Mushroom Blading Volume 4

‘Is that Bob Burnquist?’ are Todd McInerney’s first words in Mushroom Blading Vol.4 as he sits on a curb in Kamloops, British Columbia while filming for the 2010 Mushroom Blading video. Produced by Joey ‘Bad Latimer’ McGarry, Mushroom Blading Volume.4 is one of the least anticipated videos of the year (especially if you’ve just watched Mushroom Blading Volume.3) It showcases not the best, but kind of good skating from non-professionals who used to do ‘real tricks.’ Featuring Todd and Joey and some of their aging Canadian rollerblading friends… But mostly just Todd and Joey. It doesn’t end in a firework of hammers.

Filmed in pretty good production quality with no dollies and no color correction at the same spots they filmed their other videos at, the scenery and spot selection are disappointing in comparison to their previous videos making it less visually stimulating and less epic. The video puts the viewer into the individual sections sort of like other videos. With footage around weird, experimental and sometimes silly tricks, it creates a feeling that they went and filmed themselves rollerblading. Seeing what they are doing and trying to wrap their minds around it is an inspiration for a few people to go rollerblading.

If you are looking for gnarly, face-melting tricks done with 100 percent effort by older skaters– this might be the video for you… Or not. ‘Is that Bob Burnquist?’

Mushroom Blading

Mushroom Blading Volume 2 (trailer) follows three old friends (Todd, Dayna and Joey) on an 8 day rollerblading park tour through the visually stunning BC Interior and Okanagan.

No matter whether you are a physician, student or dope fiend, chances are your going to enjoy this film. Three gentlemen and their travels around the land of free health care and Tim Hortons.

Front Row Productions has truly made a work of art with the NOW that they live in. Artistically, Mushroom Blading puts any other rollerblade film to shame. Imagine Bruce Browns Endless Summer on acid. Not to mention, some of the most creative rollerblading that I have personally ever seen. I see history unfolding with these guys filmmaking abilities.

Running Time: 71mins.

In the wake of the release of Mushroom Blading Vol.2, Volume 1 is now online in its entirety. Enjoy!

mushroom blading

From the makers of “Cirque Duh SOL eh?” and “Better than Baseball” comes the controversial video “Mushroom Blading – Vol. 1” which is the first volume in a series of experimental skate videos.

The abstract skating will provoke conversation and may even inspire you to explore unconventional avenues of rollerblading. “It is making a conscious decision to develop strange skills without knowing exactly where they will take you while remembering rules are illusions that hold back your best ideas” – Todd McInerney.

With its dizzying pace, unsettling atmosphere and grimy Vancouver setting, the mood of Mushroom Blading Vol.1 has little in common with the nostalgic, carefree qualities of previous SOL videos. Whether you’re new to rollerblading or trying to relive your glory days, Mushroom Blading Vol.1 is an unforgettable and undeniably weird addition to your skate video library.

Vintage Mushroom Blading Clips Edit by Joey McGarry

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

In the wake of SOL Crew’s new video trailer scaring up some controversy over what should and should not be permissible in rollerblading, ONE contributor Adam Morris spoke with SOL’s own Todd McInerney, as well as legendary innovator Dustin Latimer, to get a handle on what the act of mushroom blading is all about, and thoughts on its evolution.

Then SOL’s Joey McGarry put together a video edit with bootlegged VHS clips to show examples of shroomy tricks from our sports early days that have influenced how people today roll. The edit is below and the story inside check them out!

Mushroom Blading Trailer

Joey and Todd of the SOL Crew were kind enough to provide ONE with the exclusive first look at their new DVD, Mushroom Blading. With skating pretty much fitting the description in the title, and cover art nodding to the classic blade flick Damaged Goods, take a look at what creative rolling minds can create when left to their own devices.
