Mushroom Blading Volumes 3 & 4

Mushroom Blading Volume 3

In 2007, mediocre (and Canadian) rollerbladers Joey McGarry and Todd McInernery started the ‘Mushroom Blading’ video series. Since then Mushroom Blading hasn’t become anything leading or celebrated… nor are they really part of a devoted, tight-knit community of skaters across the globe… They’re just guys who like to rollerblade.

Following two years of filming (during spare time from their real jobs) usually across the same spots multiple times in bad weather… Todd and Joey mind-dump another collection of ideas in the form of Mushroom Blading Volume 3.

Mushroom Blading Volume 4

‘Is that Bob Burnquist?’ are Todd McInerney’s first words in Mushroom Blading Vol.4 as he sits on a curb in Kamloops, British Columbia while filming for the 2010 Mushroom Blading video. Produced by Joey ‘Bad Latimer’ McGarry, Mushroom Blading Volume.4 is one of the least anticipated videos of the year (especially if you’ve just watched Mushroom Blading Volume.3) It showcases not the best, but kind of good skating from non-professionals who used to do ‘real tricks.’ Featuring Todd and Joey and some of their aging Canadian rollerblading friends… But mostly just Todd and Joey. It doesn’t end in a firework of hammers.

Filmed in pretty good production quality with no dollies and no color correction at the same spots they filmed their other videos at, the scenery and spot selection are disappointing in comparison to their previous videos making it less visually stimulating and less epic. The video puts the viewer into the individual sections sort of like other videos. With footage around weird, experimental and sometimes silly tricks, it creates a feeling that they went and filmed themselves rollerblading. Seeing what they are doing and trying to wrap their minds around it is an inspiration for a few people to go rollerblading.

If you are looking for gnarly, face-melting tricks done with 100 percent effort by older skaters– this might be the video for you… Or not. ‘Is that Bob Burnquist?’

Shock Interview: Joey McGarry from Memory

Joey McGarry

What is the meaning of awkwardness in your films?

It’s very human to be awkward. It’s also really healthy and funny to share your awkwardness with others. In this Facebook era it’s very easy to cut, delete and erase awkwardness so I think it’s important to put it out there. Imagine if they (aka smart people?) made a robot that was as awkward and emotionally complex as a human? It’s weird… Humans try to be robots and robots wish they were human. Actually robots can’t wish…Can they?

We see you and Todd spinning out of quarter pipes, over and over again. A different grab this time. Another rotation that time. A different tweak, a different glee. And yet there is so very little danger in this glee-fullness. Why then show this when fear is absent?

I think people connect with glee more than fear these days. I still really enjoy fear and danger though… Especially when mixed with glee. [...]

How To Be Unpopular (2000-2001): Full Video

How To Be Unpopular

10 years ago there were some VHS tapes with ‘How To Be Unpopular’ scrawled on them sent out to people in Canada and the USA:

Awkwardness, forced cool, teenagers, bad boys, Mason and I jocking Jon Elliot, Brain Fear Gone influence, lacking identity, cheap imitations, insecurity, sliding things and jumping things, Dayna still being the best, Mason working really hard on his section, Todd jocking Josh Petty, weddings, parents still scratching their heads, pointless effects, ‘good skating’… etc.

This is ‘How To Be Unpopular’. The first in the trilogy of ‘Ok Buddy…’ and ‘Cirque Duh SOL EH?’.

Special thanks to StevieE. This video wouldn’t be what it was without him.

Running time with secret section: 44mins

To our parents… We’re sorry for the naughty bits. Boys will be boys?

Mushroom Blading

Mushroom Blading Volume 2 (trailer) follows three old friends (Todd, Dayna and Joey) on an 8 day rollerblading park tour through the visually stunning BC Interior and Okanagan.

No matter whether you are a physician, student or dope fiend, chances are your going to enjoy this film. Three gentlemen and their travels around the land of free health care and Tim Hortons.

Front Row Productions has truly made a work of art with the NOW that they live in. Artistically, Mushroom Blading puts any other rollerblade film to shame. Imagine Bruce Browns Endless Summer on acid. Not to mention, some of the most creative rollerblading that I have personally ever seen. I see history unfolding with these guys filmmaking abilities.

-Randy Edwards
Running Time: 71mins.
