In-line skating evolved from roller-skating and exploded onto the scene in the U.S. in the early 1990s.

The participants found the skates more maneuverable than the traditional roller skates and more modern, due to the change in width and size of the wheels and the single-row alignment. X Games included Aggressive In-Line Skate in its inaugural event in 1995. Vert skating took the athlete from the street and onto the halfpipe allowing the skater to reach new heights above the deck of the ramp and try new tricks that require speed and velocity, such as the backflip.
