Shred til you’re Dead Northwest Tour Part 3 of 7

Shred til you're Dead

Join Chris Haffey, Erik Bailey, Jeff Stockwell, Victor Arias, and Brandon Smith as they shred though a two-week, 3,000-mile tour of skate parks in Northern California, Oregon and Idaho. Burning through 200 pairs of socks, they sleep in tent cities, always keeping a vigilant eye out for Big-foot.

The quality of the skating and video making is very high, and I am enjoying watching these episodes a lot, BUT I´m afraid nobody is going to realize that they are making an actual remake of a skateboarding video By Nichols and Charnosky called “Northwest”.

    http://www.ncpfilms.com/

Which is an amazing piece of work, and I find it a little bit of an issue when you commit plagiarism without making a reference to the previous piece of work. I don´t know, but maybe that discourse about “changing a trend” by John Haynes is really making sense.

    http://www.believeinone.com/?p=496

I dont know what to say, I´d be embarrassed to copy someone elses work and not make a mention about it, but on the other hand, what is narrated in the original Northwest is so great that its well worth passing on the legacy. I too agree that the knowledge about riding the northwest bowls should pass from sport to sport and from generation to generation.

Anyone with any interesting views on this?

( I said interesting and hatred isnt interesting or clever yooooo)

  2. dawn Says:

    SIIICCCKKKK!!!!!!!

    and Merry Christmas!!

  3. Bebi Says:

itll be fucking boring if they will skate just in concrete parks….:(

  4. bballog Says:

^ that’s whole point of the video and tour

    and concrete parks rock.

  5. Krans Says:

    Azur:

Yes, Shred has bladers skating bowls in the Northwest, but the conclusion you draw — even so much to call it plagerism or that those involved “copy” a pre-existing video — is totally unfounded.

If the premise of a roadtrip to skate skateparks in a certain area of the US has been done by skateboarders — who, judging by the description on the link you posted, BUILD the skateparks — and we rollerbladers can’t do it because it bears one or two similarities, then we are doomed.

If we have to avoid any similarities to skateboarding, then all ledges, rails, parks, gaps and everything else are off limits because that’s what skateboarders ride.

Yes, Shred is a skatepark video. Then again, the people that made “Park” should be chastised as well. Parks are a part of skating.

Shred is an HD video, while Northwest (which I can only find clips of online) is a cliche 8mm documentary, narrating about the beauty of skating by yourself. I suggest you watch Shred in it’s entirety before you start making broad-sweeping accusations that a filmmaker is copying something, which is the highest of crimes you can charge an artist with.

In essence, Azur, you make a poor case for your argument because you lack actual facts.

  6. bballog Says:

Stockwell’s line at Benecia at the beginning is so fucking awesome. Bailey just destroys again….in Oregon…. all over that bitch.

  7. Baas Says:

Whatever even if it’s a copy..

    SICK KEEP DOING THIS HAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. yawn Says:

if this video wasnt online for free, and people had to pay for it, you would have a lot of angry people. All concrete parks is wack, and everyone doing the same old stuff they always do. Its really predictable and kinda boring but im sure they had fun doing it.

  9. fuck Says:

    to azur
who the fuck gives a shit about skateboarding
    plagerism?
you mean kind of like how every skate video rips songs from artists?
or how people use one song in a video and then its used in another?

i bet you didnt fucking know that skateboarding stole a lot of ideas from aggressive inline the game

yeah when tony hawk 4 came out it was suprisingly alot like aggressive inline
did they give us any credit????
    fuck no

i highly doubt the people that put this tour together knew about this “skateboarding” tour, just a coincidence
    so shut the fuck up

  10. fuck Says:

and im sure it was just a coincidence
and im sure stealing other peoples work from a video game means alot more to me than some bullshit skate video

  11. hating this Says:

if you havent seen the skateboard video and have only seen clips online. How are you an expert or whether this is plagiarism or not? You havent even seen the other video. Also saying shooting in super 8 is cliche is the dumbest shit ever. All this fuckign hd bullshit is cliche. In the end they did pretty much a watered down version of the original but with rollerblading. But who cares really they just went on a tour up north and skating only cement parks like a lot of skateboarders do cause they are too lazy to go skate real spots.

  12. Ito Says:

This video is 13:37 long. Yeah, that’s all I’m going to say :)

  13. damn Says:

shooting in hd definately is over rated
especially since people think they should charge more for their video since it was shot in hd
its really hard to explain but
skate videos should not be shot in hd
    theres something wrong about it
    doesnt feel right

  14. andreas542 Says:

I am loving these videos, the personalities of the people involved really shows through, together with some amazing rollerblading. Keep them coming!

  15. RCH Says:

Valo do it so well. literally loving every second of it, so professional and the skating is intense… if theres any group or company that would lead our sport into the mainstream it would be these dudes, no doubt.

  16. Rob D. Says:

I loved this because you get a good mix of skating and how they’re living on the trip which i feel brings more character to the edit than just a straight 3 minute no talking, all skating clip, not saying thats always a bad thing, but here in shitty weather england i love to see a vibrant edit with lots of sunny, beautiful places with amazing parks/spots, it inspires me to skate harder so i can one day maybe be good enough to come to the states and session with these people.
As for it being an all park edit i think thats awesome because again here in the UK we have hardly any concrete parks to skate, espicaly where i live (closest being two hour drive away, and it’s not even that great) and to be honest if i hadnt seen these edits i wouldnt have made a second thought about this DVD, i wouldnt have bought it for another 6 months, when it gets reduced, but now im hoping for it to come over here asap so i can grab a copy.
And about it being a rip off of another idea, im not bothered at all seeing as this is rollerblading and that was skateboarding so i would have never watched it, besides, its not like the idea of a roadtrp is original these days anyways.

    BRAVO!

  17. meh Says:

    @damn…

something wrong about shooting a skate video in HD???? that’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen on this site, and I’ve seen a lot of stupid stuff on this site.

HD costs more because it requires faster drives, more drive space, BR Discs cost more, the cameras cost more etc etc?

really is just straight up better quality. plus why shoot at 720×486 when you can shoot about 7 times larger at 1920×1080. it’s really hard for you to explain because you are talking out your ass.

as a video proffesional of nearly 10 years now (yeah I’m old) I find this comment to be personally insulting.

why use a flat screen monitor, the internet looked so much better on CRTs
why drive a car, horses where just as good.
why fly in planes, boats can get you across the ocean.

    progression you arse.

just like this whole ‘they ripped off a skateboard video’
whatever — progression. (this site needs a login – these asshat commentators need to be outted and banned)

keep em coming. amazing skating! and a true representation of what rolling is all about. the soundtrack is a nice change from the usual also!

  18. meh Says:

    oh and merry Christmas!

  19. damn Says:

fucking jackass alot of people think were heading in the wrong direction with this hd shit
    not just me
your more likely to take out your vx to film some stupid shit
therefore leading to better stupid raw shit in the video that everybody loves
your less likely to pull out your 4000 dollar hi def p.o.s camera all the time
not only do a lot of kids on this site not like hd
ive read that shit in alot skate mags too
where people who actually know shit about the industry, whats good and whats not say their not fans of hd either
in fact as badass as a movie the one video was i never watched it more than once or twice
its funny that you can watch the old school videos countless times but this hd shit is just over rated
instead of wasting your money on an hd camera
why not put it more towards the industry like putting together an event or sponsering one

i cant believe how fucking dumb you are
you cant compare going in a boat and flying in a plane
to filming skating in regular defintion and filming in hd
    fucking jackass
thats like saying why smoke weed when theres stronger shit like meth

geez people got alot to say about a skate video. well i gotta say damn that was a great section of it … i really like the gap over the bowl…bailey and haffey were soaring over that shit… and all that other crap blows my mind away. looked fun as fuck but i doubt i could land a quarter of the shit you guys did. well done…i wonder if you guys are gonna put some differant kind of music in there some time..alittle hip hop would work with that but then again so can alot of other types..but it is good music already. MERRY XMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!EVERYONE….

  24. sk8rs_s0uL Says:

by the way….i wonder if the guys on this tour met or saw any rollerbladers at the any of the parks….if you didnt see any or not alot…dont be sad.. we or I are here with ya anyway! :)

  25. Scott Wilcoxson Says:

Love it! Stockwell lines and Baileys gap 5 are what its all about. Heres a hint people, if you dont like concrete park, dont watch any of these:)

‘why smoke weed when theres stronger shit like meth’

I was trying to give you an exaggerated example of a refusal to accept an upgrade in technology. maybe I should have said: why watch a DVD when VHS is still good? whatever.

anyway this is a waste of my time. I gotta stop commenting, reading comments, and expecting logic from people on here – it’s rotting my brain.

gonna watch the vid again though, because it was amazing fun. thanks again for this vid, nice to see all these guys skating together.

  27. Ben Corwin Says:

Anyone know what camera and accessories this was shot with?

  28. STOP! Says:

    God i hate hate

  29. Nico Soto Says:

    @damn

shooting in HD is not a wrong direction.

the reason why HD is becoming popular with skate videographers is because thats the direction everyone in the amateur film/entertainment/media industry is going in. the first HD vids to come out were black market/barely dead/ the one. filmed by Doug U and Connor. they are both in the industry for film productions/media/commercials. and because of that, they set the bar high. everyone needed an HD camera after that.

HD is more appealing to watch to a broad audience. saying that vx/gl footage is better is only a subjective opinion. you might have heard it from a couple other people, but that doesnt mean we are going in a wrong direction. HD is the future whether you like it or not. its crisper, cleaner, and more professional looking. it will only make us as rollerbladers look better. get used to it.

  30. Doug C. Says:

I love Rollerblading and our Pro Rollerbladers…end of story, rol4life

  31. Teatime Says:

i dont like HD too, both in photos or videos, look like “enhanced” reality. Thats subjective ok, but its like music played by real instruments and synthetic music, its about texture&”soul”.
i just think its sad if it becomes a standard/norm.
in general, synthesis is too much precise for art where perfection is imperfection

“I love Rollerblading and our Pro Rollerbladers…end of story, rol4life”
ps: you love some random unknown guys, i’m sorry for you.

  32. goodshit Says:

loved it, loved the parks, loved the lines, loved the filming/production

but why is Victor on the tour when the dude can’t skate park?

  36. Guy Says:

you haters have made rollernews the dumbest thing on the internet

  37. Mike Says:

As someone who has rollerbladed since the early VG days I must say it is entirely disheartening to see the hate displayed on such posts. For those that would preach their hate so effortlessly I’d encourage you to do some research about our sport. If you do I’d think you’d find plenty reasons to be proud of our past and equally inspired to clamp down on pointless hate.

Furthermore its films like this that should be celebrated and held up within our community. To those that would suggest that we are copying skateboarding I’d ask you where do you think our sport came from? Surfing begat skateboarding and in many regards skateboarding begat rollerblading. Many of our trick names are taken from skateboarding and many if not all spots are shared by both sports. I do strongly believe though that our sport has shown an amazing amount of progression in its short life and lives outside of the realm of skateboarding. That being said we can grow on our own as we certainly have, but run a serious risk of stunting growth with such immaturity/hate.

In my short rollerblading life I have been fortunate enough to live on the west coast for a time and skate many of the parks featured in this film. This film not only captures the skating beautifully but equally captures the beauty of the northwest. I currently live in Pennsylvania and think often about the west not only for the skating but for its unmatched natural beauty. I also enjoy the staggered online release. Each release creates anticipation for the next. And really what is the point of any cinema release? A film should create anticipation from scene to scene.

And in closing I’d like to remind you that one day you will all have to get a full time job and leave your rollerblades in the house for much longer than you’d like. I’m 27 now and cherish each moment I get to rollerblade. If you continue to hate I can assure you that the jobs in which you are paid to simply rollerblade will become fewer and fewer.

    Respect anyone who rollerblades period.

  38. Doug C. Says:

wow that was inspiring Mike, thankyou for that

  39. dawn Says:

good word mike!, but as an industry we do need to learn how to deal with critics. some people lack tact when offering their criticism (comes across as hate), but if you look through the tone to their point, it can actually help refine rollerblading. if anything, all the criticism/hate just shows how dissatisfied people are right now, and i think that should be taken seriously. we need to find a way to support ALL rollerbladers, not just the pros, the guys, or a certain age group –support EVERYONE with wheels on their feet, and then maybe they’ll support you! and if you can’t take a little criticism/hate, could it be that you are just a little too sensitive? but i do agree, the hate seems to be getting more and more out of hand, and everyone should take responsibility for their own words (use you real name, it helps =).

and remember, TRUST IS EARNED, NEVER TAKEN!!

  40. Coffeetime Says:

i hate hippies with their “stop hating” , “rollerbladin is all love”, fu you and your disney mentality, they cant stand youve got your self opinion, sorry if some opinion didnt go in the direction you wish.

  41. Coffeetime Says:

we must be hyper critic in our community, most than exterior view, your dumb

  42. bxd Says:

this fucking sucks, why even film this

  43. Mike Says:

    @ Dawn

I would agree that some criticism is warranted in any industry, including rollerblading. Its unfortunate though when it is coming from people that don’t have much investment in the industry and frankly do most of their critiquing from behind their computers.

Rollerblading at its size now can never support all the people that deserve it. Thats including girls too. In years past the industry did support more people financially and I sincerely wish that it still did because more people would still be rollerblading. But our reality is that it doesn’t.

So as we continue to grow its films like “Shread Till Your Dead” that we should encourage. It showcases rollerblading beautifully and has a interesting narrative. If you simply don’t like the idea behind the film, how it was filmed, or what people are skating you are free to buy a camera and make the film you want to see. That would be a great learning experience and fall under “constructive criticism”.

We are all free to criticize but we should do it in a manner that helps us grow as a community and ultimately as a sport.

  50. Azur Says:

    Hello again,

I was foolishly anticipated about the plagiarism thing of course, I do look forward to watch the entire tour, as it is also something I´d love to be able to do myself. I only mentioned it because the skateparks were the same as on the other video. Which I very highly recommend by the way, it used to be online but I don´t seem to find it anymore myself either.
Well see where they take us!
