Rollerblading Sucks : Kjrollers Article
Aggressive inline skating isn’t cool.
Its name itself makes it sound like an annoying try-hard younger brother. Its elder sibling: skateboarding. Relatively new, aggressive inline skating came about in the early 90’s, emulating grinds, airs and vert skating and other tricks established by skateboarders.
And like all younger brothers, they eventually grew up dropping its mouthful of a name and adopting the monicker “rolling” and stands proud with an industry, tricks and media of their own.
It eventually earned its place alongside other action sports in international sporting arenas such as the X-Games, Gravity Games and LG Action Sports. For a while, it seemed like things couldn’t get better.
Expectedly, the good times are not going to last; the ‘extreme’ craze is ending. It seems that viewers were over rolling, skateboarding, BMX and the like. ESPN, organizers of the X-Games responded in kind by cutting out street/park competitions and BMX flatland, leaving only vert and relegating rolling to a mere ‘exhibition’ sport.
The slump also affected sales, with major brands such as Salomon and Rollerblade drastically cutting its budget in the ‘aggressive skate market’.[...]

I like that we’re a minority. I’ve never met a rollerblader I didn’t get on with, it’s like we’re brought together by the struggle.

maybe i’m a fool, but i like current standing of a beautiful sport called rollerblading. our position in world of commerce isn’t exaggeratedly enormous, though we have some money to film videos, we have some money to set up a prize money at competitions etc. so imho, we should enjoy current situation. or we need to see millions of children wearing a t-shirt with rollerblading mark? (->like in skateboarding)

Umm - a lot (maybe majority) of rollerbladers I’ve met have just annoyed me. There’s a lot of posing dead wood that needs to be cut from this shit, and people need to stop taking everything so seriously….
I’m 11 years in, and not proud of a lot of the things “we” do.

the only thing i have to say is as long as the sport is “underground” or whatever you want to call it, the pros will never get the kind of money that they deserve for risking their lives on tricks. where do you think the money comes from in skateboarding? all those little kids you see at the skatepark, thats where.

for those too lazy to read, let me paraphrase that entire article into one simple sentence:
“to the man on the street, rollerblading isn’t the hottest thing around, but fuck it, we don’t care.”
on another note, let me just add that over here in Malaysia, skateboarders, rollerbladers and bmxer, basically anyone who comes down to the skatepark gets along just fine. no beef, no separate park sessions, heck some skateboarders and rollerbladers here even stay under the same roof!

that article kinda brings up good pointts but look at it this way blading is so much more true to self then most sports out there i mean seriously ne one can pick up a skateboard n push it down the street… as a matter of fact out here in NY its all u see, but it takes skill n dedictation to strap on u skates n actually call urself a skater … point is skateboarding is becoming so mainstream that atleast 40% of the “skaters” that do it r posers because it is indeed a fad….
