One (Blade Life): An Interview with Dominic Sagona

You are one of the toughest critics of style in our industry, and for good reasons; what do you think led to the way that blading as a whole has changed from the FP days to how we know it today?
Skating changes, like anything else that progresses or is new. Skating has changed due to many things over the years⌠itâs hard to pinpoint, but in my head, as Iâm thinking about it, the word âtrendsâ keeps comming to mind. Tricks that are in, fashions, prominent pros; all things that have changed in skating.
I guess if youâre trying to compare how the âFP Daysâ were compared to how skating is today, itâs the attitude that FP brought and the way we portrayed skating and the way we felt we should skate. Maybe itâs because FP was in the spotlight and our general delivery of skating was very raw, uncut, hard.
So to me I feel like I related these things to skating more-so then, than I do now. The more personality, and origionality you have as an individual, the more itâs going to rub off in your skating. Itâs not that we donât have that with pros nowadays, I just think with FP being at the forfront at the time, and with that being the first representation of rollerblading being portrayed like that, that maybe it felt different? But that wasnât really the first, âcause werenât Brian Smith, Arlo and Brooke pulling knives, wearing halos, and baking cookies and all that?

…hm…and maybe it´s time to stop crying about how lame rollin is today compared to the fp-days….I loved that era but come on get over it…let´s move forward….

i wouldnt say its lame nowadays, it just moved into a certain direction. Rollerbladers seem to focus much more on style & being creative, instead of laying hammers on a daily basis. sagona himself is the best example for this

@rolligion: the FP crew was strong back in the days… Petty, Feinberg etc. were part of it and they just killed shit everywhere they went…but that was a long time ago…

If someone has to hold down in order to stay at a pro level, why is Jon Julio still considered pro when he doesn’t compete or put out the most progressive sections? Nothing against him, but why is it that he gets to coast by because he owns a boot company and others aren’t awarded this benefit??
I’d really like to hear a legitimate reason for this.

what’s wrong with his eyes? is he a serious druggy or what?
