that was cool in 1999
The ASA destroyed rollerblading by bowing down to all of ESPNs demands. The ASA still runs the Xgamea and every other “eXtreme sport” on ESPN, even motoX. Now that there is renewed interest in rolling espn and the ASA are back on the bandwagon to get the cash. Since Feb. they have been airing old ASA comps on ESPN to try to hype the ASA brand. FUCK THEM! They failed, don’t let them do it again.
Also, Aaron did that monkey plant at every pro tour ASA he entered.

Go to http://www.asaentertainment.com/ and the first three things you see are Tony Hawk, Hoffman, and a dirtbike. NO ROLLERBLADING ON THE MAIN PAGE!

* MTV Sports (The one with Rawlinson bustin his shin):

THIS IS HISTORY RIGHT HERE PEOPLE. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME ROLLERBLADING WAS SHOWN ON A MAJOR NETWORK BEFORE THE XGAMES WERE POPULAR. ACTUALLY THIS VIDEO LINK I REPOSTED WAS ON MTV BEFORE THE FIRST XGAMES!!!!
It’s funny because in the segment, Tom Fry and Arlo are being interviewed at Chicken’s Bowl which is a very famous built-for-skateboarding-pool which is ownd by an old school skateboarder, that would otherwise have NEVER let inline skating go down there if it hadn’t been for MTV Sports.(little factoid).

Commentator1: “With a nice Fakie 360 starting backwards finishing backwards with a nice grab right in the middle”
Commentator2: ” Fakie, meaning, he’s moving in backwards”
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:00 pm
yea, I would love to know what the new rollers think looking at that old stuff…….
ASA was good for us on the otherside of the world to see some skating…. also helped us get a park built by showing the council what real skate objets look like…
no work for me to day, just sweet old school souls

Yeah looking back at Arlo’s footage, he’s really been a key figure in promoting rolling. He’s pretty well spoken and makes a good spokesperson, something this sport is fortunate to have (he has a look and tone that appeals too). Not to rag on all the best rollers like Haffey, Broskow, Aragaon, but honestly I would say they don’t have the spokesperson appeal like Arlo. But also, maybe that is a good thing, its probably better to have a pool of very talented athletes stay in the background. Either way though, any sport or industry, as superficial as it sounds, needs good spokespeople to represent the industry. It is superficial but overall it helps any sport.

I have more coming, it is just really time consuming to capture, capture, compress, and upload all these. I got a post on be-mag’s messageboard I keep updating as I go.
