Here is a brand new skate from the USA called “DK skate”. The skates are sold in China Beijing at the moment ; they look a bit like a mix of Nimh & Razors.

the shop that sells them used to also sell the “fake” mindgame backpack under its own brand name” tornado”. what is more horrifying is that not only they copied the mindgame design for the pack, they also made an exact copy of mook frame called “moon”.

Nimh did not have the money to produce their own products in house. The same kind of thing happened to xsjado. Skaters who want to start a new skate co are forced to make unequal deals with large corporations. In the end economics takes over and the large corporation uses a loophole, which is usually written into the contract by the big co.’s lawyers, to take complete control of the project in order to raise their own profit.
Plastic manufacturing is expensive, even in china. In fact it is much more expensive to make a pair of shells than it is to make every part of a skateboard. It is an industry that will be dominated by large corporations for a very long time.
Sorry guys, the 100% “skater owned” skate company is a very long time away. Even if they own the company they probably will not own the rights to all their parts.

All the major companies within the industry started with an orginal idea. Razors ingenious shell system that allowed you to easily replace parts, and Remz pioneer to the freedom of feet concept cofortable and great all around.

“skater owned companies” is just the dumbest and biggest gimmick ever. many times these pathetic “skater owned companies” don’t even have in capital to run the company. nor do they even do proper R&D with their product testing. many times they just slap pieces together, give it a gimmicky name and hype (e.g. “make your own groove soul plates” a.k.a. all soul plates are make your own groove, dumbasses) and expect all the idiot, pro-rider idolizing kids to buy them up and fuel the hype. many times these so called “skater run , fuck the corporation” companies don’t even last more than 12 months in their own arrogance and ignorance. i’d rather support companies that have production and R&D capabilities, rather than support a pathetic skate-run company that can’t run the company properly.

I live in the Dominican Republic, here a simple pair of skates can be resold up to 6 times: people with money get brand new top of the line skates, they sell them to get new ones eventually and a chain starts… the poorer you are the farther away in the chain you land. Name 3 companies that died within a year that were skater owned in this industry? you can’t and won’t be able to cause they’re all still here. Fiziks stuck around for a while. EPoch never made it through the door but that wasn’t because of company problems, it was because of engineer problems. BHC is still here, Mindgames was around for like 7 years, Senate is still around, skater owned companies do better than a lot of major companies like Oxygen or Kryptonics cause they cater to us even if it hurts them cause they know that they’ve just gotten themselves a loyal fan base now cause of it.

It cost over $100,000 to produce a mold per size in america for skates. it cost less than $30K in china. WHen you produce a mold, you can own the mold, however there’s this little thing that the chinese do which is illegal here. IF they like the idea, they may want to make more money on the side and sell your stuff there. What you’re saying would make sense if you actually got that information from Elliott but we both know you didn’t. That being the case I guess Coach bags don’t make enough money to own their parts out right, cause they have the worlds biggest knock off purses ring in china. I guess nike doesn’t own it’s parts as well cause they make ike’s in china as well. when you pay for the mold and all the pieces in china you own them as far as the contract between you and that manufacturer. that doesn’t change however the way a manufacturer see’s how to make more money without you knowing about it. PLus it’s hella hard to sue anyone in china cause their laws are very different from the rest of the worlds’ We all respect patent laws but china.
WHat they do is good and very bad for our industry. It’s good cause it means that the rest of the world may take notice cause it’s being knocked off in china which means it must be good. It’s bad cause those marketing dollars that would’ve come out of those extra skates being sold now go into someone elses’ pocket who could care less about the industry.
For those of you who dislike SOC’s or Skater Owned Companies. THese are just a few things that happen from skater owned companies. Haffey makes more money than alot of riders cause Kato is a skater first. Remz has kept the same team for the most part since the beginning, Xsjado started off with a core team that hasn’t changed cause it was a SOC. All these companies like Nimh and Remz, Xsjado, etc traveled around the world sponsoring events and picking up riders that you’d otherwise would’ve never seen cause they’re a SOC. these companies do more for the sport and industry cause they keep everything within the family if they can. What would Matt Andrews be doing if it wasn’t for Julio and others who own their companies. How about T-Rex. he use to ride for RB, now he’s on Valo and he’s not even riding anymore really. No videos or anything. He’d be dead in the water if it wasn’t for SOC’s. We also need bigger companies to help out, but they only want the money and nothing else. SOC’s want to see the industry grow. we all want money but SOC’s have more than that on their mind.

there is one huge flaw in your argument. The coach bag knock offs are not made in the exact same factory using the exact same materials as the real ones. These skates are made in the same factory using the same molds and the same plastic as the “real thing”. Have you ever seen the “shifty” skates?…. same mold, same plastic. Nimh did not buy the mold, nor did razors ever own them. They are owned by the manufacturing company that produces them. The plain and simple fact is that the exclusive production contract with razors ran out and people found out.
I did not get my info from shima or elliot, infact I have not seen either one of them in about five years. I am a freelance corporate consultant, I work with Mitsubishi, Sony, Fuji heavy industries, and Sumitomo on a regular basis. these are all huge conglomerate companies who have all subcontracted most of their plastic production to chinese companies to cut cost. Yes china does have huge DOMESTIC piracy issues but when it comes to things that will one day be sold on the international market they have just as much regulation as any other country.

I have a few more things to add.
Do you understand how injection molding works or the amount it costs to buy the raw materials? for example: the cost of making ONE [that is one size left foot] skate shell, mold and materials, would make you bout 50-70 disposable razors or tooth brushes. Even in china copying a skate shell and producing rip-off skates would not be profitable enough to take on the risk. Making bags or shoes is a totally different story, all the materials are cheap and easily obtained. Injection [in our case ABS] plastic is a combination of two chemicals that are mixed microseconds before being injected into a mold, kinda like how cola syrup is mixed with carbonated water in a soda fountain at McDonalds.
Plain and simple, copying skates is not cost effective…. even in china.

1. I do know both of them.
2. I went to college and graduated.
3. I’ve studied economics and more importantly I’ve had to study the economic structure of China.
4. The Coach factory is where the majority of the knock off bags come from. Have you ever been to China? My friend when you go to china if you ever go. You must take off the Coach label and hide it otherwise you’ll be arrested trying to bring it back into the states cause they know that there’s a huge problem with the knock off bags, or in that case real coach bags but at cheaper prices cause the employees are making them and distributing them just like our industry does with movies. American Gangster wasn’t a knock off boot leg movie. I actually know the guy who got the pirate arrested. China is notorious for taking a already made product copying the dimensions and creating cheaper products to sell in china. I bet it cost maybe 75 and below to make Nimhs, if it’s the Chinese dollar, I bet it’s around 30 or less on a mass production level. include that with the fact that they didn’t spend any marketing dollars or R&D and they’re already ahead of the game.
Also I saw the shifty and the krafty skates. and the new ones that china just made. For you to try and dis me by saying GO to school and learn english is quite funny since I’ve been in college level English classes since I was in the 10th. grade and I went to a private college. Truth is. with most of these companies that are making copies of our stuff. It’s not because of your lame hair brain excuse of the contract being too late. it’s because these companies don’t file a patent with china at the same time that they file one with the US. if they do file one then it’s really expensive and then you have to have a way of knowing if someone’s broken that law cause it’s pretty flexible with foreign country companies. If that law is broken then how are you going to file a lawsuit and collect money on them stealing your idea. is it worth it to do all these things or just look the other way and focus on the rest of the world. Mr. Work for Mitsubishi, Sony, Fuji heavy industries, and Sumitomo.. that’s outta the mouth of someone I know who owns a worldwide company and has work done in China all the time. and has also had his product stolen in China.

ok i think we can sum this up a little.
1. these are nimh cuffs
2. these are nimh soul plates.
3. these are cult boots.
4. these are most probably made by the same manufacturer as nimhs who is in china.
5. the molds (cuffs and plates) used to make this may or may not be owned by nimh
6. the molds (cuffs and plates) may or may not be owned by the manufacturer.
one has two choices here
1. support nimh
2. support DK
choice one, would be to support a skater owned company who manufactures their stuf fin china, like most, and who invent these new products.
choice two, would be to support a company who used molds created by another brand to produce their skates for less.
i think the answer is pretty simple here, if we want our sport to grow, people who create new products need to be supported or else there will be no new products.
i doubt DK has a r&d department, to come up with new products.
choice is yours.

Now before you go all crazy I do know some of their products are made in china but the higher end bags are made in the US.

FYI. Molding cost. 30K total per size in china. take into consideration that tooling is estimated within this cost. each skate depending on how many past the 1000 mark you make are easily made much cheaper. For instance. if you make 30,000 units then it should cost around 7-15 per unit to a experienced negotiator. or someone like the firm I work for we could get it for 5 per unit. Bottom line Italy is more expensive, asia is the cheapest way to go if you want the man power. America can be equally as cheep but not for the labor, Mexico is cheaper but they’re not the brightest in the field of technology.
