INSIGHT: A rollerblading Documentary, by Tim Toase

Part 1:

My A2 Media Studies production; a rollerblading documentary which attempts to break misconceptions surrounding rollerblading. Feedback would be appreciated.

the reason ppl discuss is because skating is relevant to society >> which is relevant to us, (since we’re in it)!

Very interesting little peice from these guys, as a UK guy, I feel this kind of look at rollerblading is much appreciated. These are just some intelligent guys, who are looking at what they do in the context of today’s world. Their place in life, what they do, their directions.

I’d be very interested in doing an extension of this project.

Razorr…could you tell me why you think its the worst edited documentary ever, and how you think i could have improved it or done it in some other way. Your opinion is valued, i just wona know why you think that because i have to evaluate the overall production as part of my media coursework for college, and that includes viewer opinions. Thanks.

You made a very nice documentary, interesting,with a good state of mind.
Sometimes describes our passion is a quit difficult but you did it in a smart way.

Yeah Emode your right, i’m the first to say the quality isn’t good so i would totally agree with you. I would have liked to have used better quality material but i didn’t have access to it. Cheers for the comment.

overall, not bad, but not great either. Here’s is what i think would help it out:
1. better filming of skating. don’t be too timid to get down and dirt, and film with some fisheyes on the bottom of the rails, follow cam, whatever. i think that a variety of different type of shots would help break up some of the monotony.
2. a narrator would of helped established a not only a sense of authority, but also help the viewer understand what the thesis of the docu is and what you are trying to prove/make people understand. i think the main point is to help people understand your point of view, and do to that, you need them to know what your subjects are that you are trying to uncover.
3. better audio/lav mics/ equpiment. A lot of the shots were overexposed, grey skies, the interviews were at times hard to understand. Your school should have Lavaliere mics for their students to use, and they definatly would of helped. If you dont have any, then film the interviewee in a room that doesnt have too much reverb, aka pad the walls if you have to. Better quality shots make for a better looking and more attractive film. If entices people to watch your film if it looks good. I dont know if in your schooling you have gotten to color correction yet (assuming you are going to school for a video editing degree), but if your shots have ugly color or blow out skies, tweak it out! im sure some lab assistants would be more than happy to help you out if you needed help.

Thats all the advice i can give you mate. I don’t mean to sound harsh, but i think the WHOLE rollerblading community needs to step up their production values in all their work, whether it be video, print, writing, etc. So if it sounds like i am nick-picking or being too harsh, don’t take it too personal. In closing, don’t pay any mind to the people that say “this sucks” or whatever, just keep working on improving your work. At least you are creating something, which is more than half of the assholes on this site who have a negative opinion about everything but don’t have shit to back it up!

So wack, thanks for the contructive feedback, you’ve made some really helpful points all of which would help to improve it and i’ve learnt alot from what you said. Nah it’s not for a degree, just my media coursework for my last year of high/secondary school. My teachers did say put emphasis on mise on scene and the content, as thats what i’ll be geting marked on; the quality of each shot and the way its edited. I guess i should have stressed that i wasn’t attempting to create the next Barely Dead, but a school production and the reason for them being on youtube was to get feedback from part of my target audience. Regardless of this, thanks for the comments they’re gona be real useful for my evaluation.

i liked it, good work, i think everyone in the cities knows how much of a bitch it is to skate like the perfect spot that just happens to be right in front of a major corporate company building, and have the security charge at you before u even attempt to skate it. it sucks

I would like to see the perspective of the people who dislike rollers. I would like to hear from that security guard or that business owner’s thoughts about our sport and us in general hell even skateboarders, and that is a whole different thing in itself. Of course we all know or have an idea why but I think it would be cool to see and understand there nature of hate/dislike for us is. Other than that is is a well done documentary.

wheeey you went to my local park and train station (rampworx and lime street station) haha how bad is liverpool please? you should come back to rampworx, the box you sessioned is now eight feet longer and a lot higher, makes for a pretty good session. and i noticed your from york, i went to york a while back (not skating) but i looked around for spots or at least evidence of skaters but i didnt find anything, is there any spots coz im planning to go back soonish :) im kinda familiar with the centre of york, by the main station and the cathedral and all that tourist bollocks.
nice video though, some of thwe skating was sick

ikkleperry…Yeah York’s not the best place for skating, but there are a few alright spots and 2 skateparks, if you leave your email address or summat i’ll get in touch when you next come.

Joshicus…Ermm i only really go there when i’m down in Devon, but i normally end up there at some point because a friend lives in Paignton.

Good effort.
But i want to ask u something… do you really think that someone is going to sit and watch this, then feel bad :”Omg ive been treating rollerbladers so bad, im such a bad person” and something is going to change?! Come on. If you watch a golf documentory, would that touch u?
And what is the point? Prooving me that there is some kids that their goal in life is to skate all day long?! I do skate, but i have to work, study and rollerblading comes after these things… beleve it or not there’s much more than skating in life, right? ;)
Rollerblading is a sport. JUST a sport. Not less, not more. There is no spiritual, deep, pholosophic ideas behind grinding a ledge or a rail. So stop making them up, it’s just about having fun…
Rollerblading is about fun :)

Nah i didn’t expect someone to feel bad, but what i hoped the documentary would do is show people who have misconceptions not only about rollerbladers but about young people in general that we’re not all like the stereotype; that was the main idea i was trying to address because i’ve found that most people do just think what was said on the vid, especially the older generation.

The point of it was as i said above, this is why i didn’t just have skating, i was told i had to introduce characters and construct a story to show that not all rollerbladers are like the stereotype. I dunno how i gave the impression that those guys just skate all day long. All of the people involved, including myself do have to study, work, but what i was attempting to show is that skating is good because it does allow us to escape from all that and i know full well theres more to life than rollerblading. I also never intended it to be philisophical, instead just like what you said; thats its fun to do. Again, i dunno how i gave the impression that there was deep meaning behind grinding a ledge. I hope that half clears a few things up. I should just add, this documentary was half intended for those people who might have bad impressions of rollerbladers and half for rollerbladers because it obviously involves our sport.

Overall really good edit liked it but…Music was too loud like when talking stops music goes too much loud it was irritating a bit.
