Fearless: Dave Lang profile shot on 16mm film

A beautiful little film directed by Joseph Zentil, featuring skater Dave Lang, and really, NYC itself. A treat for the eyes!
Thanks Al Dolega.
With director Joseph Zentil, this production took a different approach towards capturing rollerblading at its rawest.
Its objective was to depict skating not as another “extreme” sport but as an art; not only physically, but also in its imagery. With a specific vision in mind, the crew felt it was important to stray away from the cliche’s by focusing on the skater as a whole; rather than his association with the industry. Self produced by Dave Lang and Joseph Zentil, they proudly present to you this visual experiment. We greatly appreciate your feedback and your time.
Shot with Kodak 16mm B/W negative film (7222) on the Arriflex BL.
Director: Joseph Zentil.
Starring: Dave Lang.
Cinematography: John Filmore.
Director of Photography and Editing: Dave Lang.
Key Grip Work: Ignacio Lopez and Eduardo Araujo.
Special thanks to: Shields Skate Park

That was amazing. Great follow through. Excellent lighting. Great story, perfect music to catch the vibe you were trying to reach. I felt like I was watching an artsy film. This is exactly what people outside our community need to see when it comes to us. Not just our struggles but the beauty within the struggle. For instance. Perfect touch was when Dave held his withered up glove to the camera as to say that he’s having the time of his life but it doesn’t come without consequences. Hence the holes in his gloves from falling. Or his attempts at the 900 just to get back up and try again. That skatepark scene was just perfect. Excellent lighting all the way through it cause for it to have such a strong presence of awe inspiring anticipation to find out what was about to happen and why was the camera panning to the right, when all of a sudden…. Boom, Dave comes in with a 900.

Can a higher quality version be downloaded anywhere? If it’s just posted on YouTube, it might as well have been shot in black and white mode on a digital 8 camcorder.

March 18th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
that was a great step forward in the way rollerblading is captured and presented to its audience. im glad someone has approached a rollerblading film like this. you captured the idea of the lifestyle well and the skater fit the bill perfectly. i would love to see more of your work, especially with different skaters, styles and themes! so fresh, keep it up.
March 18th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
it was sick. i really liked the feel.
only thing is, i’ve seen dave lang skate a lot better at woodward, etc.
i know that wasn’t the focus exactly, but y’know.

March 18th, 2008 at 11:25 pm
very different and refreshing, really great direction. I can’t believe they used ’round midnight for the second half! haha well done.

oh my goodness. what a breath of fresh air and a glimpse of of what the masses will see in what rollerblading is as an art and not just a hobby.
i definatly see this in a shortfilm movie on hbo or sundance or some sort of film festival.
like the guy said on another comment if there where added other skates with diffrent lifestyles and themes it can make for a whole movie.
but not to take anything away for this segmant. in is definatly and beautiful.. if not the most beautiful roll movie i have seen.
everything was captured perfectly. and makes me happy that i live the rolling lifestyle.

epic. that artsyness that aspect of time effort and enjoying the fruits of your labor, that is waht this video passes on to me. that was excellent, editing filming, skating, music, everything, deffinatly makes the list of best edits i’ve seen. you should really consider going down to Sundance or other film festivals with this.

Brilliant! Fav part was trumpet section at the banks. Dave hits a backslide and in the background was nothing but bikes and boards, felt that way plenty of times at the skate spots i my town. Loved it.
March 19th, 2008 at 2:48 am
forgot to say it has a sense of loneliness and isolation which gives it depth. you must have noticed there’s bike riders in many of the shots and they’re always in packs whereas Dave is always alone.
March 19th, 2008 at 3:30 am
amazing!
March 19th, 2008 at 6:03 am
That’s so sick…I skated with Dave a few years ago at Woodward. Beautiful film, guys

this video was really neat i liked the way this video has substance and maturity this makes videos like B. Unique checkmate look like they were made by third graders
March 19th, 2008 at 9:34 am
loved it

It’s very original … but i think i m the one to think that the level of this skater doesn’t deserve so much means and so nice picture quality…
I think narcisim is the basement of this footage, but i’ve got to say, that i never saw a 900° so well recorded.
Nice but coulb be better, just in the choice of the skater …
I wish i would see that with Austin Paz … who film so much , and who’s not so filmed… ( and U know he skate hell)
March 19th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Beautiful and mesmerizing. We need more of this capturing
the essence (if thats possible) of rolling. I was really digging the Pink Floyd. That song “fearless” is off the album Meddle(1971), which is an excellent album if anyone cares.
March 19th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
its interesting to see something with a bit more narrative direction than other edits posted up here so that was cool
entering it into a film festival might not be a bad idea either, i think the general public would appreciate it even without understanding skating
i didnt really like the framing of some of the shots tho wether to miss out some of his body was on purpose or not?
something a bit more up beat next time for sure
March 19th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
That was amazing!!!!
it was totally depressing, I can’t describe why but I liked it
March 19th, 2008 at 4:56 pm
i liked it very much :)
March 20th, 2008 at 6:09 am

By far the coolest skate film ever. It left me breathless!!. To say this is talent is an understatement. This is pure genius. The filming is fantastic.
