China: Counterfeits & Tornado DK1 Skates
I posted about the Moon Frames (photo below) in 2006. 4 years later the frames (Xsjado Counterfeits) are still sold in China. I have no idea about their technologic improvements (i don’t speak chinese), but they updated their package graphics (which is no more a rip of the Quality Dvd Cover, by Dustin Latimer & JB Snyder).

Other surprising news: there is a new skating brand in China, which released the Tornado DK1 Skates (photo below) ; a setup is also availiable with the Moon Frames (DK One Moon).

Thanks Mike.

theres no such thing as protection of trademarks in china, they barely know about whats so common in the western world. the “cult”- shell by the way is not a violation of trademark rights, cause its an open mould that everybody can use
March 9th, 2010 at 2:05 pm
looks alot like the old cult boot.
March 9th, 2010 at 2:09 pm
arent the parts made there anyway? lulz. and kenj..theyre nimhs now. even an old man like me knows this by just lookin
March 9th, 2010 at 2:21 pm
theyre everything… cult, USD damoncles, nimhs etc. just like i said, using them as a skateshell is the cheapest way
March 9th, 2010 at 2:44 pm
The soulplates looks like Nimh soulplates…
March 9th, 2010 at 2:53 pm

March 9th, 2010 at 2:55 pm

March 9th, 2010 at 3:15 pm

fake ;)
nimh boot + soulplate,
xsjado frame + kizer suspension frame,
jug liners
an the name… deshi dk1.
what the fuck?
March 9th, 2010 at 4:37 pm
The DKs are like Nimhs without the liners, skins, cuffs and toecut.
Although they do have the same boot and souls.
You could say that moon frames are mooks, remember though, all freestyle frames are the SAME FUCKING THING.
March 9th, 2010 at 4:39 pm
Konsta is right, looks like everybody forgets the general trend of new ‘innovative” skater-owned brands such as Valo or Nimh, wich consist of taking an old skate mould (Razors cult for nimh, majestic for Valo), put a skin and add new soulpaltes, and announce a brand-new skate on the marcket with massive improvements and amazing skate technology.
If someone doesn’t believe that, just take those skates and take the skin away !
Don’t get me wrong, I do think Valos and Nimhs are great skates, and I am glad such amazing legends as Julio and Shima have an opportunity to create their own skate brand, but it is more about esthetics of their skin and great quality of their old-school mold than their so-called innovation, and to be honnest, I hope those 2d hand molds are just a necessary step (a new mold for a complete skate’s cost is insane) to let them do their own stuff after some years.
I am just finding it funny that people are going to complain about China, copying skates, when it already has been the case long before in Europe and America.
Peace
March 9th, 2010 at 5:18 pm
razor cults with nimh soul plates WOW way to go china
caugh! caugh! GAY!!!! caugh!caugh!
March 9th, 2010 at 5:19 pm

March 9th, 2010 at 5:22 pm
??????? ?????that it’s probably good for the rollerblading community if they can afford replicas than not being able to skate at all.
March 9th, 2010 at 5:22 pm
nimh with no skin
March 9th, 2010 at 5:38 pm
A pair of skates in China coats between 2,000 to 3,000RMB (330-450$) The average salary for someone working full time at a reasonable paying job earns between 1,000 to 1,500 per month.
Trade Infringement or not, those DK1 skates allow much more kids to skate.
March 9th, 2010 at 5:39 pm
Inline skating has been becoming very popular in China over the past several years. Mostly with Slalom and some Urban/FSK skating, but the newer generation of kids are definitely growing up with skates the same way kids in the USA all had skates in the 1990s. Seeing how the average pair of brand-name aggressive skates in China costs roughly the same as a full months wages, it’s easy to see that these cheaper Chinese brands are the normal standard. At least the people that want to start aggressive skating more seriously can find something that matches what we buy in the West.
March 9th, 2010 at 5:44 pm
dk1 (nihm without skins copy) + “moon” frames (xsjado copy) + original juggernaut liner?? haha can´t be true the jug iner must be a fake too haha
March 9th, 2010 at 5:53 pm
A pair of skate is already considered expensive in industrialized contries. Think about how much it represents for the majority of people coming from emerging contries. The price is the same if not more expensive in China, but the average wage is like ten times less.
Plus Im certain the quality of these skates and frame must fucking suck, if xsjado or nimh and razors feel threatened by these sub-par quality product maybe they should produce better quality products.
And from an economic point of view I don’t even think these skatse takes a lot of sales from nimh and xsjado, as these must targeted to first time buyers. Im sure the experienced skaters in Chine know that these frames doesn’t perfom nearly as good as the original prodcuts.
If anything these things might bring more youngsters to rollerblading.
So before talking shit all over Chine maybe you should put yourself in their place.
By the way the packaging of those frames are the same since 2004, nothing new here.
March 9th, 2010 at 5:55 pm
good old china!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
March 9th, 2010 at 6:13 pm
copyrights and trademarks give the “owners” the ability to set monopoly/cartelize prices in a given market. think about the labor and materials put into making a skate (which, with modern technology, isn’t a lot; that same modern technology is probably patented/trademarked/copyrighted/etc. thus preventing cheap replication of the technology): should you really be paying more for a brand name or for the actual work and materials put in?
In some cases, 9/10 of the prices they charge are attributed to the brand. That is absurd. Who knows what it is for rollerblading, but because of patents/trademarks/copyrights being upheld by the strong arm of the law, it provides people will wealth simply unattainable in open marketplaces.
This is good for rollerblading. Maybe one day we’ll see replication technology improve and more localized production of goods because people simply refuse to buy into this scam and skates can be made on the cheap and sold at a reasonable cost. Then we’d have a lot more bladers!!!
March 9th, 2010 at 6:17 pm
Yo read JOEL’s piece, he’s completely accurate about it. He’s the only one that seems to understand how it works. China toy producers are the ones that provide us. Putting on a skin may be produced in italy or in china too it doesn’t matter no new company is buying a completely new mold risking it might even won’t work out.
sorry for the bad english
March 9th, 2010 at 7:20 pm
its basicly a nimh without the skin!!
probably not very well made either
March 9th, 2010 at 7:35 pm
Theses skates would probably not hit european or US market so what is the point?
Just show as a normal stereotype that china’s speciality is counterfeiting?
Thumbs up you ALL RULES!!
March 9th, 2010 at 7:35 pm
they should produce some chepest parts for xsjado like cuffs, buckles ect.
March 9th, 2010 at 8:01 pm
good post JOEL
didn’t know how the facts are
but i also think that this is a good opportunity for chinese skaters getting their skates for a lower price perhaps … or better to say hopefully.
peace
March 9th, 2010 at 8:14 pm
ehem… fuck china anyways
March 9th, 2010 at 8:28 pm

March 9th, 2010 at 9:08 pm
LAME
that’s what we get for producing in china.
We need a skater owned country :) hahauehaeuhae
March 9th, 2010 at 9:36 pm
Atleast they got good liners
March 9th, 2010 at 9:44 pm
Yes I second what JOEL, I would ahve written pretty much exactly the same thing but he has gone to the trouble of typing it out prior to me so yes he is exactly correct, if you call China a rip off then in actual fact your calling valo and nimh a rip off too as they are all using 80′s and 90′s shells on 2010 skates and slapping skins on them to try re-invent the wheel, wake up and take your skins of kids and please don’t be soooo dam nieve.
March 9th, 2010 at 9:55 pm
also to add to what I said, at least these guys making these skates have the balls to show that they are using old shells unlike the cover-up crew!
And to be brutally honest these look a darn sight better than some of the nimh’s and valo’s out there, due to there non-bulky simplicity.
March 9th, 2010 at 10:30 pm
its damn* naive*. rollernews has spell check.
March 9th, 2010 at 10:35 pm

March 9th, 2010 at 11:50 pm
those yellow bastards are eating dogs and maybe their own children as well. Now what do you expect?
March 10th, 2010 at 12:20 am
I agree with some of the comments, but definetly these skate are for sure not so bad quality.
Why skates are so expensive for europe and USA markets? because of the extra exportation charges ( partly of course) and then cos of marketing made around these skates.
two products can totally be the same quality but solden at a different price only cos of segmentation reason. in Europe, you’re not going to buy a pair of brand new skate for less than 150 cos then most of bladers think that a lower price, it means cheap quality, cos not any opinion leaders supporting the brand etc …
so I think that in emerging countries as for many products, there are not so many strategies and segmentation.
you can find the marketed products from European and American companies but also the first price products which are same quality, just black… and simple.
these basics black skates don’t need to be marketed, they’re produced to answer to need of billions of new potential custommers on a growing market.
in europe and usa markets are already saturated (full) and this is why you need to create a brand image to get new customers. anyone can see the facts (roces=valo & cult=nimh) but these customers are going to look for the rest, they want to be able to identify to a brand and looking for an advantage in buying nimh instead of cults.
finally, I’m not sure at all, but maybe they are agreements between blading brand and chinese factory to produce these skates with these parts etc …
March 10th, 2010 at 12:41 am
Dude those are like skinless NIMHs without the toecut. haha
