Shock: Tony Rivituso and Las Vegas Represent

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

TONY RIVITUSO

When most people think of Vegas they think of the Strip, neon lights, gambling… the asshole of America. Is this an accurate picture? As a local, how do you relate to this picture?

The area that consists of Las Vegas is huge (the strip being a small fraction of the city), and this isn’t counting the surrounding cities of Henderson and Boulder City. It’s like a 50 square mile island surrounded by desert instead of water. There are a considerable amount of skate spots that have been found and even more uncharted territory to be conquered. So physically, I would say no…

As far as the caliber of people, I would say that “asshole of America” is a fairly accurate description. Fortunately, the niche of people that I am blessed to be involved with on a regular basis is very down to earth. Outside of that, I find it difficult to meet people here that don’t trip my douche bag alarm some way or another. My particular favorite is the mutated-westcoastern-guido breed that seems to be ever prevalent in these parts.

Being a local in the city that never sleeps has its advantages though. Since it’s a 24 hour city, we have no last call. Most bars don’t even close. It rarely rains, hence it being a desert. If out-of-towners visit, we have a wide variety of goofy attractions to offer (i.e. Bellagio water show, Helicopter rides to the Grand Canyon, Rooms with wall to wall trampolines.) It’s kind of bittersweet; I love and hate this place. [...]

Blade Life: An Interview with Tony Rivituso

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

Tony Rivituso

Tony, I met you about a week after my first submission was published by ONE, but right away I knew that at some point I would be writing something about you. Here we are about 10 months later, and well, yeah, what’s up? Why don’t you tell the readers out there a little bit about yourself? What do you do besides rollershredding?

For sure, a lot has happened since we first met. I’ve really just been focused on keeping that momentum rolling. I love to get out of town and travel as much as I can.

Skating is the perfect outlet for me to do that. I get to see parts of cities and meet people that I wouldn’t have had the chance to otherwise. I’m 26 and have been skating for the better part of 11 years. I would by no means consider myself old, but I feel it more these days. I don’t live an overly eventful life outside of rollerblading.

I’m really close to my family. My sister and I hang out regularly. I have the best dog in the world, his name is Dude. Both of my roommates, Brett and Jeremy, skate as well. We all stay pretty busy, but skate together every opportunity we get.

Some of our local bars have good shows, you’ll usually catch us at the Griffin or Beauty Bar on Fremont Street. Vegas has a lot of great hiking, so I get out to do that as much as possible. I also enjoy reading, drawing, and a good game of disc golf. [...]

I have been skating since grind plates were important. I consider myself an active participant in the Atlanta skate scene. I skate every single day and support any event happening in the A. An Interview with Jon Fromm: One, Blade Life

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

jon fromm

It is astonishing how much easier and more efficient the internet has made our daily lives. A concept that one generation ago would have been right at home in a science fiction novel has become the norm under which we conduct business, educate our youth, and inform the masses.

Because of the internet, someone living in Arizona is able to interview someone living in Florida, then send all of the photos and text to someone living in California where he can edit the info and post, Tweet, blog, or fist-fuck it from Tokyo to Topeka. Without this innovation in technology, the very idea of any of this would be just that—an idea.

I bring all this up because this next interview is with someone who I first met utilizing the internet and all of its social networking majesty. 20-year-old Floridian Jon Fromm is all over the internet, whether appearing in numerous edits, popping up in Photo Journals and posts, or chatting with me on Facebook.

He is continuously pushing himself, progressing his skating while developing a unique style all his own; which is why you’re sitting down to a computer or, for that matter, looking at your phone and reading this interview.

— Ben Karris.

Sean Kelso: Conference Interview

Friday, April 30th, 2010

sean kelso

Whatup SK? What was the last thing you just did before opening this email?

I’m actually working on my final project for school. Its a history of William Penn Highschool in Philadelphia. I tracked down all the old videos it has been in, all of the legends who have come through, and I’m doing a history to present, short documentary on the location. A normal looking high school seen through the eyes of a skater.

You’ve got your hands full right now with skating, filming, and college. What’s your normal day like, and how do you balance so many things all at once?

For school, I always make my schedule 2 days a week, I go all day long which kind of sucks. However, I don’t get much home work, so this makes room for everything else, which is basically just skating and filming. [...]

Jake Eley (LocoSkates) + Scott Quinn: Interviews

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Scott Quinn

Jake Eley (LocoSkates) Interview

Tell us a little bit about Loco Skates, and the background of how it all came about ?

I opened Loco in December 2004 after the realization that I couldn’t work in a job where I had to take orders from someone else. I was heavily involved in skating so it made sense.

The Woodbridge brothers had opened the late Hold No Hostage shop near Portsmouth which was a massive inspiration. As it happens Rob Woodbridge now plays a massive part in the functioning of LocoSkates. We have a high street store in Eastbourne near Brighton Sussex and of of course the website is world wide! Scott Quinn Interview

Tell us a bit about yourself ?

My name is Scott Quinn I am 22, originally from a small town called Chapelton but currently living in Dumbarton, Scotland; getting to session unit 23 everyday.

How did you start Rollerblading ?

well, I used to play hockey and I watched a couple of guys from my team grinding a bench after practice, I knew straight away I wanted to do it, and not long after that hockey wasn’t a priority any more so I left the team to have more time skating. [...]

Colin Kelso: X-Crews Interview

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

colin kelso

Tell us what are your thoughts about the truth of Skating and whats the philosophy that you wanted to represent on the truth 2.

When it comes to piecing a video part together, I have always tried to do things differently. I like to watch old videos and see things being done that were cool then, but are not being done now. An example of that would be my fast plant 360 in my section in the truth2. How many people know that Matt Andrews did that in vg5 supernatural?

You see, making something new is pretty close to impossible but people have been trying to re-invent things so they can be shown in the right light. Take Farmer with bringing negatives back and doing them with style. Or look at Broskow and how he popularized a once often over-looked illusion spin. I mean those tricks were not invented by those guys but when you watch their video parts you can see they sort of have this message going on with them.

And don’t get me wrong I am not saying these guys consciously make an effort to do that, but maybe they do? Either way, the point I am trying to make is that the “truth” or whatever you want to call it behind my philosophy is to use your brain. The best skaters in the world all use their brain and are more times than not are extreme perfectionists when it comes to their skating.

I have always lived by the ideal, “don’t tolerate sloppy skating if it is in your skill set to lace it better”…or something along those lines hahah. I think you guys know what I mean. [...]
