To each their own. As far as the color goes, the desaturated look is part of my style. I'm not into the whole fake looking, over-saturated digital images that seem to be in abundance.

I guess I don't see the wall as "hogging" the composition, but more simplifying the photo and adding string shape to it.

Flatblack i just think it would look nice edited on a monochrome (black and white), as right now its simply not eyecatching, the colour isn't there so I think monochrome would allow this lack of colour to be overcome.

I do photography for various publications (mostly non-rollerblading) but this would not make it into print because it lacks quite a lot of things.

The angle on the top photo is not applicable for such a long rail, the top of the rail is chopped off for one, and its difficult to see the bottom part of the rail as its quite dark. Also the depth of field is nice but the range ends mostly at the brick wall where the skater is also, because the brick wall is the primary background of the subject this makes the background around the skater hog the picture no matter how much light you throw on him.

The light is doing a great job for the subject no doubt about it, I do really like the picture, im just voicing my opinion, and you can ignore it or listen, either is fine with me.

Ummm, it's already pretty monochromatic. If it was completely desaturated, it would be even more hard to make out the subject.

If you're talking about being "quite dull" why the heck would you suggest "monochrome"?

He's a bright spot right in the prime area of the golden mean. I don't feel he's swallowed by the background at all.

Thanks for the input.

Ok the light and depth of field on the first photo is quite good, but the problem is that the background is swallowing the subject way too much, and the background colours and contrast are quite dull so it makes the overall image feel dull.

Try monochrome on it (as the colour is not worth keeping) and play with the contrast on the monochrome, with the good lighting it should bring the skater out from the background more so.
