Airborne Movie (1993) : skating clips
Airborne is a 1993 comedy/drama film starring Shane McDermott, Seth Green, Brittney Powell, Chris Conrad, and Jack Black.

Plot
Mitchell Goosen (McDermott) is a teenager from California who loves to surf and rollerblade but his parents who happen to be zoologists were given a grant to work in Australia and they have to leave Mitchell with his cousin Wiley, his aunt and his uncle in Cincinnati, Ohio.
This is far from the beach which means he can’t surf or do what he usually does. When Mitchell arrives in Ohio he meets his cousin Wiley (Green) who is a terrible driver and kind of a dork but tries to act cool. Mitchell then goes to school with his cousin and they get on the bad side of the hockey players who happen to be the popular guys that travel in packs.
These people include Jack, Augie (Black), Rosenblat and the Banducci’s . Mitchell and Wiley end up being tortured by the hockey players for weeks. Mitchell then falls in love with Nikki (Powell) who is Jack’s sister and he doesn’t want her to see him.
After Mitchell schools the preps in street hockey and embarrasses Blane, the leader of the preps they challenge Jack, Snake, Augie & the rest of the hockey team to a rollerskating race down Devil’s Backbone and they ask Mitchell to join their team because they were impressed by him at the street hockey game and they need him in order to win and gain back the respect they deserve.

Trivia
* Jack Black was reported to do 100 push-ups before every scene, this extended filming for two months.
* The stunt rollerbladers used in the film are credited as the Team Rollerblade, however it has been revealed that many of these rollerbladers were in fact members of the notorious Santa Monica based Blade Blasters street gang.
* Seth Green refused to be called by his real name during the entire production - to get into the part, he insisted on being dealt with as Wiley at all times, on and off the set.

this movie actually helped make skating popular when it was made.
chris edwards did a lot of the stunts.
maybe if not for airborne, rollerblading would’ve never been considered gay. it’s a shit movie in every way.

Brink was awsome and so is Airborne its actually really cool. Chris Edwards actually played a pretty big roll in the movie as being one of the jock dicks with a really annoying laugh. You guys would love it.

Man that movie is so dope… I want it on DVD. That movie is one of the reasons I started skating a long time ago.
“it’s a shit movie in every way.”
No way that section with Chris jamming the vert then that qaurter pipe transfer thing is dope. He skates fast and exciting… sure the clothing style is bad, but it was the 90’s.

this was my first skate movie and the coolest thing back then. respect
July 19th, 2006 at 2:45 am
Yea this was my first skate movie also. It was not the first thing that inspired me to roll actually. The first thing that did was XGames when Shane Yost, Sam Fogarty, Matt Salerno, Vinny Minton, Pat Lennon, Yasutoko and Englehart brothers and many more just made it look so tight. Airborne helped cement it for me because back then it just seemed as if there would be no stoppin rolling’s popularity. No one knew what was going to happen next yet those movies actually ignited a whole generation. It would get us to start doing 360s and then eventually just like anything else we would make it evolve. Rolling wasn’t always the great eye candy thing we see now. For those of you who do not respect or are interested in our history then you’ll understand why we haven’t shot further than we are now. Way too many of us seem to not care or give a damn about the kind of work many of us put out today for rolling. None of it came easily. But you know what. Everyone has their opinion and is entitled to it. Just be sure that you know WHY it is that way and HOW you can reasonably justify your opinion.
July 19th, 2006 at 3:05 am
Last I checked skateboarders love and adored their history even though theirs weren’t filled with big 360 flips or triple kick flips to tail manuals. They love and buy their history. As a result they keep pushing their sport. It’s no wonder you click on some of their videos and the stuff is hot.

July 23rd, 2006 at 1:11 pm
OMG! Chris Edwards, Mike Opalek, Jess D… even the great oldman Alan Vano. Those were good times! gosh
July 24th, 2006 at 4:30 am
wow.. he grinded a hand rail with no groove and a flat setup
and didnt catch… and i’ve caught with mooks on a handrail..
(did a 270 royale)
January 9th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
Ok it looks cheesy now, but back then this was the shit. When I saw that frontside in the handrail I was like WTF##$#$$$! and went out into a 3 step 2 foot high handrail to try my first grind ever on California Pros (no aggressive skates back then, the TRS were pretty much a transitional phase until the Tarmacs came out).
I agree with those that advice respecting and embracing our history, strong cultures rely on firm these roots
